Does anyone know of a source for extra small finger & thumbpicks? My 10 yr. old daughter is wanting to learn to play steel, but we can't find picks that will fit her. She's already playing 6 str.lap steel w/ her bare fingers & I don't want her to develop any bad habits.Any help out there? _________________ http://www.myspace.com/davidagriffin |

David,
Thanks for posting this, as it is a topic I've also been interested in but never followed up on. I have two nieces and some family friends in the same boat.
FWIW: I think that any bad habits are likely to come from incorrect/poor hand positioning, and not so much from not using picks. I think the picks will be more of a tone and volume issue...I could be wrong though, and welcome any other views on the subject.
Picks do take a while to get used to though, so the earlier one can start the better...but they gotta fit! I managed to "scrunch up" (the scientific term) some picks so they "sorta" worked, but had NO luck with the thumb pick!

It's pretty easy to take a little metal off the bands of regular finger picks with a file or Dremel, and you can pad the insides of thumbpicks. On a celluloid thumbpick like Dunlop, if you dip them in hot water you can reshape them too- shorten the band then tweak it down. Padding the insides of fingerpicks doesn't work as well, because the bump into each other. |

David; I found 4 small Dunlop coated picks today. If you'll email me your mailing address I'll send them to you for the young lady free. I got the in a 200 count order by mistake. Have tried to order more but was told Dunlop has discontinued making them. I'll also try to shrink her a thumb pick & send it along. Got to incourage a new crop of steelers. 'sides we're neighbors.
