Carter closes doors

I just read a e-mail from Bobbe Seymour that said Carter went out of Business, I hate to hear this Carter was good for the Steel guitar community. This is sad news.

This is the first I've heard.... really hard to believe. When I met Bud Carter at the '96 West Coast Steel Guitar Show, he told me that even though they sold stock steel guitar models (micarta), Carter could build a custom U12 to my specifications... including curly maple body with abolone inlay, a lock lever for the B6th tuning, and 5 knee levers grouped around the left knee.

I sent a drawing with exact locations for the placemnet of the knee levers, and a desired copedant.... that's when I met John on the phone.... each day... for about 5 days. Lever by lever he went over each detail the day they would be working on that area. I know I was lucky to get this kind of personalized service from Carter... and I'm quite sure if it had been a year later they would have been way too busy to spend this much time on a custom order. But I was so impressed... and then I got the guitar... and boy howdy was I impressed... and whenever I take this fine guitar to steel jams... all I hear is "What amazing tone".. and it's so true.

Goodbye my friend, and thanks.

PS, after making my guitar, Carter decided to add a "Custom" section to their web site... and steel number 1,000... well it looked a lot like this one Smile

Jerry, I too read the news on Bobbe's e'mail and am saddened by the news. For those who didn't read it, Ann Fabian has sold the rights of "parts" to a company in Canada, but no more Carters will actually be made. At least parts if needed will be available.
