Some folks here might be familiar with Thomas Abrunner via his various tribute pages to Clarence White, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Country Gazette, Gib Guilbeau, Wayne Moore, John Beland, etc., where he set up a biography and timeline for each artist.
Recently I passed on a fair amount of info for his Clarence White pages, regarding White's other bar-band the Roustabouts, the ying to the Reasons/Nashville West's yang.
For those not in the know, The Reasons aka Nashville West, was a bar band with Gib Guilbeau, Wayne Moore and future Byrd Gene Parsons. That group is very well know, due in part to the fact that Gib Guilbeau and Gene Parsons were key figures in the country-rock scene. Also, a live tape of the Reasons as Nashville West was issued in the late 70s (recorded in 1968) and on CD in 1997 and remains in print in different versions around the world.
The Roustabouts, an overlooked and interesting group, a fully functioning outfit, finally gets more than a passing reference, thanks to Thomas.
The page is very much a work in progress as Thomas edits my interviews and research into his own. As always he has worked hard to make it all fit into the context of the Clarence White timeline.
See it here, in conjunction with the Reasons - Nashville West period:

Please take a look if you're a Byrds fan, interested in the SoCal scene, or knew any of the pickers listed in the topic header. Thomas and I are also looking for feedback in regards to anyone who knew these guys, or saw the Roustabouts during this period.
It should be noted that over quite a few years, Jerry DeMers, Johnny McKnight, Bob Warford, John Delgatto, Dennis Mathes, Jim Scott and Bo Wagner all helped with this.
Cheers

I can't contribute to this post about the group that is mentioned. But I have seen the Byrds in 1970 in Frankfurt at a Rock Festival.
When I listen to Clarence White, I allways hear something new, he was such a great player! |

I did a tour or two with Jim Alley. Jim had a recording contract then, and came and played bass with us for a while. This was in the 70's with Tater.

Jason, Jim Alley played bass with us on occasion when I was with Johnny McKnight's band in Orange County. Also you mentioned Richard Arlen, he played bass with us for a very short time at the Pioneer Room when I played there in the sixties with Jim Hendrix (no relation to the rocker). Here's a shot of Johnny & I in SoCal this September when we were visiting out there. The steel player is Ron Epperson & the drummer is Leo J. Eiffert........JH in Va.

That's a good photo fellas, thanks for sharing Jerry.
Clarence is the man, I suppose everyone has their fave picker, CW is the one I go "oh.. you wanna hear some hot sh!t.. check this record.." and then spin something with his contribution.
Roger, I know Jim Alley was frontman with Charlie Louvin on a regular basis through 1968-70, although he did leave for periods to push his own records.
I imagine he could only afford to go solo for so long.
He was supposed to sign with Capitol in 1970, but the same cost cuts that cut Capitol's deal with Opryland Records and producer's like Glenn Keener out, also saw Jim cut as well.
He also recorded for Avco in 1974 and 1975 before they got rid of the Nashville division, that might be the period when you worked with him?
I don't know of any Alley records after that, which is not to say there wasn't any.
