Doubled courses?

Post by James Mayer »

Anyone ever try making a 12-string/6 course lap steel? Any thought or opinions on whether or not it's a worthy experiment?

I have an adapted 12 string. Sounds sweet. Alan Brookes probably has one too.

So...why is it so uncommon? I've never seen a production model, only adaptations or one-offs like Alan's real-steel guitar.

tom doughty uses one too, i think possibly kelly joe phelps. uncommonality has to do with the narrow minded pigeon-holing mentality that seems to infest many circles including steel guitar circles.

Check out the above. I've built several over the years.

I built the following 16-string lap steel for Basil Henriques about two years ago.

Here is a video I shot of him playing it. Unfortunately for some reason the sound and video have gone out of sync by a couple of seconds, but you get the idea.
