Is it very common on E9 to have a pedal or lever that raises the 7th string a half step?

I do, along with raising 1 a half step. Several players over the years have had those changes. I think several have dumped the change in favor of raising 1 to G# and 2 to E. I find I use both, so I have both (strings 1 & 2 on a second LKL and 1 & 7 to G on LKV).

I wonder if I would start to find interesting things to do if I changed http://tinyurl.com/jeffscopedent so RKL raised 7 instead of lowering 6.

To answer your question. Yes, it is common. I would bet all of us have either had it or considered having the half raise on 1 & 7.

I'm in the school that raises 1 & 7 both whole tone to G#. I like the unisons it makes with string 6. I still have the 6 lower on my pedal 0 franklin drop, but like you said I've found many ways to get around needing to drop just string 6 on its own.

I get my G notes by also having 3 & 6 lower a half tone on my LKV so I can still get that dom7 sound in the pedals down position. Not only that, but I have a lightning quick change from A & B pedals to B & C pedals just by hitting my vertical knee and going up two more frets. Is it a necessary change? Definitely not, but it makes sense to me.

I dropper the 6 string lower in favor of raising string 7 a whole tone. Much more versatile! And you can put the 1st, 2nd and 7th string raises all on one knee lever.

I've had the 7th raise a half tone for years. Johnny Cox turned me on to that in 72. He told me Buddy Charleton referred to that as his "Ernest Tubb" lever.

On my RKR, I lower the 2nd string a full tone with half tone feel stop, raise the 7th string a half tone and lower the 9th string a half tone.

I also lower the 6th string a full tone with a half tone split with the B pedal. On my RKL, I raise the 1st string a full tone, 2nd string a half tone and lower the 6th string a full tone (and the 1/2 tone split with the B pedal).

I've had that for a long time. It is on the same lever that raises 1 & 2. Never leave home without it. But I have entertained the idea of lowering the 6th... I guess I need another pedal or lever or two.

Once, Jeff Newman had a class in Fresno and said there was no need to do that. Too late, I've been raising 1 & 7 for eons. With A and B, makes a great dom 7th and and add the F lever for Augmented.

I dont have that change now but see it as a very useful change nonetheless. I lower 6 a whole step and raise 1 a whole step. Though there is no real half stop feel on either, I find myself raising 1 halfway fairly often, and would do so on 7 as well. Adding another lever or pedal that raises 1 and 7 a half would be cool!

Funny, I was just thinking a couple days ago how often this pedal raise is not mentioned, since increasingly I have really been working it, but then the Forum members come through!

The last couple months I've been using it quite a bit when figuring stuff out from records. Though I don't see it too much in tabs, the 1 &/or 7 string raise seems really helpful with good old honky tonk stuff, getting certain tones, like Brumley and Charleton maneuvers, as Jack Stoner mentions. Of course it's the player's imagination and need, but that's how I've been applying it.

An interpretation of "Abilene" intro a la Buckaroos using 7th string raise(do not take this workup too literally, I do suck!)

As a beginner, I have the 1&7 half tone raise (RKL) on my GFI student guitar, but I have yet to find a use for it...

Anyone have any other examples or songs that call for it?

as mentioned the half tone raise on string 7 along w: pedals A&B gives you the dom 7 note
quite handy
the half tone raise on fret 0 when playing in E is also quite handy : it gives a minor 3rd
of course in that position a hammer on & pull off fret 0 to 1 back to 0 is more efficient than using the lever
here's a ditty that i often use in the minor 3rd position
in G for example : fret 6 ( minor 3rd position ), pedal A & lever G engaged - pick strings 765 & move up 3 frets to 9 & up to 12 & 15 like a diminished chord
the half tone dissonance is hip imo
in the same position a bluesy jazzy ditty :

5---6A-------------------------6A---------3A
6---6---------------------------6----------3
7-------6G>>6------6>>6G---------3G-------3G>>3
8-----------------6----------------------------------------3

i have the G# to F# on string 6 w: the Franklin pedal as well Winking
