Guys, I sold a black GFI D-10 a few years ago that I really miss. It was one of the first pro models that GFI built and has the gold vein design that was discontinued because the paint wears off. Also not one of the light weight models like they make today. The serial number is 1002.

I have one. Pearl blue frame with black mica, like Mike Sigler and Ronny Miley. Great guitar, and yes, they stopped making that custom color frame. I was the original owner, and later sold it to a student, who never played it. I bought it back a few months ago.Great guitars, under appreciated, but you know, you owned one. It`s just down the road if you wanted to take a look. Could meet halfway if you want it.

Guys, I would still like to find this particular black GFI D-10 if anyone happens upon it. The serial number is 1002 and is black mica with the gold vein design in the metal necks.

Thanks to George Rozak for finding me the sister to this guitar as I'm certainly happy to have that tone and playability. But I would still love to find the black one.

I like to bump this up every year or two. I've been looking for these particular steels for a number of years now with no luck. Especially the black early model GFI D-10. Fortunately, I still have a red GFI identical to the black one I had but I'm continuing my search in hopes that one day I will locate it.

Well, I've had this post running for 8 years and my search started quite sometime before that. I'd still like to find this particular early model black D-10 GFI. I sold it back to a friend I purchased it from who then sold it another friend nearby. From there it went to eBay and it hasn't been seen since. Drop me a line if anyone happens upon this particular GFI or one of the early models with the gold vein design on the necks and endplates. They discontinued this early on as the gold paint would wear off fairly easily.

Was wondering if this was before or after Ralph Mooney's
White GFI. I sure love the sound of Mooney's Red one.

There's actually 2 GFI's with the S/N 1001. The first one built in 1992 and the 1001 one built, which would be an Ultra model. They initially started the sequence using 1001 to differentiate the pro models from the student models which, until 1992, was all Gene was building. After changing the sequence to better identify how many were being built they started again at 0001. The guitar I have now is 0002 which is the 8th one built in 1993 so 6 GFI's have duplicate serial numbers. If the one you're referring to with 1001 is an ultra model I'd guess it was around 2000 year model or later. If it isn't and had the gold vein design it would be the first pro model from 1992.

I purchased the one I have now, the 8th one made, from George Rozak after his reading this thread years ago and it's identical to the black one I had. I think they made 10 or so with the gold vein design and realized the paint didn't last on the metal. There's also some differences in the design and the Ultra models are far more advanced and much lighter. I'm just partial to the earlier models. I was fortunate enough to purchase the first keyless Gene built earlier this year thanks to another outstanding member of the forum. Marty Broussard currently has it and it sounds so much better with him playing it, obviously!!!

I'm not sure which year models Ralph had but let's face it...he sounded great playing anything as does Norm Hamlett on his GFI.

BTY Mooney had the Red Powder coating. I'm thinking
it was a early 2000-2001 but not for sure. But it was a
beauty. To me it sounded better than the last 2 GFI's he had.....But GFI builds a great Steel.

Well, 13 years into my failed search… but I’d still love to the find this particular early model black GFI D-10. I’ve had her red sister for many years (thanks George Rozak!) and will never part with it.

Had a blue lacquered MSA classic D-10 (weighed a ton) that I sold to Dave O’Brien many years back that I'd like find, too!

The things we part with only to later regret.
