My Steel King is distorting pretty bad on low volume and up to about half volume up. Volume above those levels, the distortion goes away. I have checked the speaker (hooked up to another speaker) the cords (used different ones) unplugged the reverb unit, eliminated the volume pedal, run a cord straight out of the guitar to the amp input. It is definately in the amp. Every thing is fine if I plug into a different amp. Any ideas as to what is causing this problem? Also, the distortion is worse if I play two or more strings simultaneously. I guess the two different frequencies of the notes multiplies the distortion and makes it a lot more noticable. |

George if your preamp gain control is higher than your power amp setting you will get distortion. Always run your input gain at a lowe level that the output gain is set. Try it and see. Fred |

Fred, I really appreciate you trying to help out. I am very familar with not getting the pre gain set higher than the master gain, so that is not the problem. Even if it was, I don't think it would only distort at low volume and then clear up at high volume. One thing that it might be is the master volume pot. Something fell into the knob and and broke it and the stem that is attached to off. Perhaps a new pot will remedy the situation. I pulled the chasis and if I tilted it back just slightly, the distortion would go away, but it was very touchy. Just moving the chasis a hair would bring the distortion back. So I think it is shorting out somewhere, but my untrained eye cannot see where. It now needs a new pot anyway, so I will try that and if that doesn't work, then it is off to the repair shop. |

George come out of the low level port and go to a external amp or even a mixer and listen with headphones. That may tell you if it is the power output pot as you described. Just a thought. Fred |

Fred, your suggestion of coming out of a port to another amp worked!!!!! I went from the XLR direct out to another amp. NO DISTORTION. I don't know if you have a Steel King or not, but the only outs are effects send, tuner, footswitch, and the XLR line out, which has it's own output pot. So, it's replace the output pot that got broken off first, and if that doesn't work, then off to the repair shop. I can relay the information about going out of the XLR line out with no problems to the tech guy, which should help him zero in on the problem if it turns out to not be the output pot.
THANKS, THANKS, THANKS, FRED |
