Hi, I have a S8 Tradewinds lap steel where the strings are more than 4 quarters distance from the pickup. They are not adjustable. Should I bother with trying to raise the pickups to get a "beefier" tone? I end up playing my 6 string Melobar more because it has more presence or a richer tone. Thanks, David

4 plus quarters is over 1/4" and lower than I'd recommend. Raising the pickup will give you more output and beef, too close and it will get woofy and lose clarity.

Great word!

Too close can also produce a nasty sort of fast tremolo that won't go away - caused by the magnets pulling on the strings.

Known also as Wolf notes hence woofy as in bark (Woof Woof)
OR did the poster mean wooly, as in hearing it through a sheet of cotton wool ?
Wooly is a common colloquial this side of the big pond, for lacking in high frequencies.
