Tradewinds lap steel string height.

Hi, I have a S8 Tradewinds lap steel where the strings are more than 4 quarters distance from the pickups. The height is not adjustable. I was wondering if I might get a "beefier" tone if I could somehow raise the pickups. Would this make that much difference. I find myself playing my 6 string Melobar more because of the tone. Thanks, David
