Dear fellow forum members:
It is my pleasure to announce a free public program to take place in Lafayette, Louisiana, November 10th (Tuesday), at 6:30 pm at Vermillionville. "Steel Guitar Traditions," will take place as part of the "In Your Own Backyard" series of free public programs sponsored by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's Center for Cultural and Eco-Tourism. The program will feature the personalities, knowledge and fantastic steel work of Richard Comeaux, Joe Rogers, and, if we are fortunate, Murnel Babineaux, supported by Cajun music legends Steve Riley on accordion and Roddie Romero on guitar.
This will be a great opportunity for these exceptional players to talk about the history of the steel guitar in Cajun music, and also to talk about the different styles of steel playing found within Cajun music, and also how those styles compare with others in non-Cajun music. They will also demonstrate those styles during the program. I encourage all of you local players to come out and participate in the conversation, as my job will be to moderate an open conversation between the players on stage and the audience. My hope is that we will all be able to ask questions and give answers as we think about the history of this remarkably unique style of playing the steel guitar.
Press release is below. I hope to see you there!

"Steel Guitar Traditions"-- November 10th, Vermillionville
In Your Own Backyard: A Free Lecture Series Unearthing Local Cultural and Environmental Knowledge
Lafayette, Louisiana—The Center for Cultural and Eco-Tourism at UL-Lafayette continues its free monthly series focusing on cultural and environmental traditions and knowledge in the Acadiana area. Held the second Tuesday of every month at Vermilionville's Performance Center from 6:30-8:00, the presentations range from informal workshops to question-and-answer forums to interactive presentations. Each month features a different topic for discussion, led by a qualified facilitator. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. The project is co-sponsored by CCET and the Vermilionville Foundation, with support from the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission.
The series brings a wide range of topics to a larger audience and a broader forum in order to provide an educational opportunity to the Lafayette community and offer new perspectives on established traditions and perceptions. In our own backyard, we still fall prey to preconceived notions and commodification of our culture. CCET’s lecture series bridges this gap between academia and the general public, and this linkage is fundamental to a better understanding of cultural and historical authenticity and constructively addressing stereotypes.
November 10th's Informance will feature discussion and demonstrations on Steel Guitar Traditions by moderated by Dr. John Troutman, UL history professor and musician, and featuring musicians Benjamin Joe Rogers, Richard Comeaux and Murnel Babineaux, as well as back-up musicians Steve Riley and Roddie Romero.
As always, the event is free and open to the public. Food and drinks will be sold.
This program is sponsored in part by funding from the Acadiana Arts Council/Acadiana Center for the Arts and the Louisiana Division of the Arts.
