For sustaining qualities of strings, how much of a factor is the gauge of the string relative to the scale length and the pitch to which it is tuned?

Ex.
If one is using a .017" for middle C, would using a .016" or .018" affect the sustaining properties appreciably __ given, heavier gauge for shorter scale.

Many thanks
