Guitar suggestion

Hello,
I'm a noobie here and have an interest in learning lap steel. Does anyone have any suggestions for a low cost (but sounds pretty good) 6 or 8 string electric lap steel? My ears seem to be drawn to the Hawaiian sound of playing and not so much the overdrive of a blues guitar.
And if you have any recommendations for learning material (i.e. books, DVDs) for a beginner, it would be much appreciated.
I figure you guys know better than anyone else.
Thanks
JS

I have a Chandler RH-2 I like very much. String-through design, solid mahogany body, single-coil pickup. I see them selling used on eBay for $250-$350.
For instructional material, I don't think you can beat the Jerry Byrd course. It's pricey, but worth it.
Listening to Jerry Byrd's recordings is a joy and a great learning experience. When learning a new instrument, I find it very helpful to immerse myself in the music of a master and internalize the sound.
