Take a peak at JERRY's Music page........and give a listen. It's an olde, olde song but the playing technique is unequalled and seldom found among today's steel players.

King Record Studios in Cincinnati produced some of the greatest 'sounds' of Jerry Byrd's playing over the years. They are a gold mine of great music.

Ray, you are so right in recognizing Jerry.
Even today he is such a challenge.
After listening to Forever And A Day and his
work therein I decided to try to follow his
playing.
Here is my transcription Tabbed and also Mp3
of my attempt to emulate.

a friend here in sacramento just finished writing a new book about king records. i think it is called 'king of queens' by jon hartley fox.......

i haven't read it yet but i imagine it covers jerry as well as everything king produced.

Great stuff!

There's an additional slide to F9 in the beginning part and later in the solo. I think he's sliding the slanted bar down 2 frets to move from F (root, 3rd) to F9 (7b, 9th). The same sound can be had on strings 1 & 2, fret 5 to 3, and easier to play in tune. But I think Mr. Byrd "slid the slant" because it happens immediately after the 3-string slant... no time to jump down to fret 5, although in Jerry's realm anything is possible! Either way, it's real "ear candy"!

Chris...........thanx for the info' about the book from Sacramento...regarding KING Records.

While Jerry Byrd performed on KING Label with so many artists like, C.Copas, H.Hawkins, Jimmy Osborne, Clyde Moody, Neil Burris, Anne Jones and countless others.........he was contracted to Mercury Records during much of that same time span.
He was merely a sideman, working in the bands of others or with his own loyal 'String Dusters' group, Zeke Turner, Louis Innis, Tommy Jackson, etc.

Jerry was a real hero to most of us. I've never heard him play badly. He was always an inspiration, and he will always be sadly missed. It's incredible to realize that all the time he was playing all that great music he was in pain from a kidney stone in his bladder, and found it hard to sit down.
I wish I could have met him. I guess I left it too late. He was one of those people I assumed would always be around.

Who was the artist that Jerry Byrd played that beautiful solo on “Forever and a Day?”
