I'm sitting down to a late dinner at 'Chances R' in York NE on my way home a across
the prairie to Colorado. I'm thinking what a wonderful show I just experienced. John Ely
played some great sets of steel music over the 3 days we spent in Joliet.
Everyone played well, and I met some new HSGA folks. Aloha Jamie and John.
Fun jams, and good music and friends - what more could you ask for.

Aloha back at you. Nice job posting from your iPhone Smile

I have to say I was very impressed with all the music and talent. It was much more fun than I was expecting and everybody was super nice. It was really great hanging out with John Ely, Duke Ching, Gerald Ross, and all of us lesser stars Wink BTW, many thanks for backing me up -- you and Craig did a dynamite job!

Have a safe trip back to CO.

It was a lot of fun, I wonder what songs I played? Remind me in about a year. Chris, did you drive back through any snow?

Great time as always in Joliet.

Lot's of new faces in the crowd and on stage this year - Jamie, John, Terra etc.

Craig Stenseth "broke the wall" and made his first appearance on the Joliet stage playing bass. Next year a steel set Craig?

I missed the Saturday show, the luau show, the uke workshop etc. due to a family obligation back home. I'm assuming all went fine.

hi all,
I missed the snow on the way home. Nebraska I-80 had been plowed, so was dry. I lucked out. Long drive, but cheaper than flying this time.

Gerald, Saturday was fun. Luau show was really good -It had two acts! Duke did a fine job of putting a show together, Kimo did some hula, and got a bunch of guys up from the crowd to join in ( I finally learned Hukilau). Duke and John did some nice duet steel work. After a short break, John got up and did a fine set of steel music to close the evening.

John Ely, the special guest artist for HSGA, gave outstanding performances with a wide range repertoire. He blended into his program classic Hawaiian, hula, hapa haole, country, and western swing with special smoothness. He has a true Hawaiian touch and sound in his playing. He admits that his years of playing professionally in Hawaii affected his playing style. We'll see. It's much easier to play simple chords and slides on steel for the "general public" and have people wondering how you get that sound. On the other hand, the person playing lap steel usually knows what the songs in the set are going to be, key signature, tempo, etc.

Thanks to Wally and Peg Pfiefer, Don Weber, Frank and Donna Miller for the year-long effort it takes to stage the HSGA Joliet Convention.

A lot goes into the planning of this show. The fact that all the attendee has to do is pay the admission fee is testiment to all the hard work these volunteers perform all year round.

Very Happy
Thanks, Gerald, for the kind words that we always like to hear. We'll try harder next year and we already have a pretty good start. As long as the people keep coming,- we'll be happy.
And Thanks to you, Don, for the nice photos of John and his back-up. Especially for the complete list of his program songs. I know you must have more photos,--- so let's see them.
We'll see everybody again on October 7, 8 & 9, 2010.

Joliet was a blast even though I only made it there for a day.....But then again I have been known to make it from 10,000 miles away when I used to live in Singapore. (Come to think of it, was there not a song or lyrics to that effect?)

It was just great to meet old friends again and make new ones. John Ely... the ultimate professional, great experiences and great fun to listen and talk to. And tremendous fun too were the two jam sessions way into the "wee" hours of the morning....

Well Folks, here are some more pictures to inspire you or bore you.

R-L John Ely and Duke Ching playing Beautiful Kahana with Ian Upton, Virginia G, and Kamaka Tom

Dr. Gil Ogawa, an Hawaiian transplant, singing Hawaiian Scotsman enthusiastically.

Greg Wong doing the Hula

Big Kahuna and Board Member Terry Miller's precision playing of Dark Eyes but making it sound like Bright Eyes. How do you do that Terry?

Talented musician Ian Ufton on pedal steel making it sound so nice.

Upbeat Hawaiian songs being sung by Kamaka Tom and Dr. Gil Ogawa with backing from John Ely, Duke Ching. Ian Ufton and Virginia G are conferring in the background, wondering what is going on up front.

Duane Solley, a relatively new newcomer playing his sweet Hawaiian tunes on his E-Harp.

Frank and Donna Miller, with Frank playing his T-3 Stringmaster and Donna singer her best impressions of Haunani Kahalewai

Newcomer Jamie O’Connell with his famous backup band, Chris Kennison and Craig Stenseth

Dave Gaitsch, a very polished new comer, playing outstanding E-Harp.

Cecil Brasiel, who played exceptionally well in his first performance at Joliet.

In closing, may I introduce my wife, Joan, who was the best part of the program.
She is on the left with Betty Bahret who is the inspiration for the song, The One Rose, on the right.

Aloha, Smile

Don,

Fantastic job of documenting all of John Ely's performances! That's very useful. It was nice to meet you as well. Wink
