... in how to deliver a song with gobs of feeling. Joan's singing is just sublime in every way. And that she can turn around and just kill on a Motown tune like Heatwave or a Spinners soul tune is jaw -dropping in its virtuosity. She never sings anything without 100% conviction. Jerry Douglas on his Jason Dumont Bel Aire gives a breathtaking example of how to accompany a singer with perfect taste and beautiful harmonic fills and when he takes a slightly longer fill, it just nails the feeling of the song in a few heartbreakingly perfect notes. JD doesn't usually make much of the slidiness of the instrument (he tends to hit notes dead on) but when he does choose to emphasize a slide it's perfect. One of my favorite clips in the whole Transatlantic Session series.

Thanks Andy for posting this. Beautiful. It's really great to hear him play in this context.

It sure is, Steinar. I can't recommend the Transatlantic Session DVDs enough. It was a rare and magical production from the beautiful, intimate setting in Scotland to the quality of the camera work and editing, to the unique combinations of performers who may never again be in the same place making music together in their lifetimes. All these world class musicians checking their egos at the door, the combination of Jerry Douglas & Aly Bain as producers, and the setting truly moved all of the musicians to create some of the most amazing and beautiful performances of their careers. THe music is on par with the finest music ever televised such as the Billie Holiday/Lester Young programming of the 50s. Buy the 2-DVD set. There's not one bad performance and Jerry Douglas is magnificent throughout.

Here's another example .... just one on many amazing performances ...
