I have a BW speaker that has completely quit giving sound. it is not the cable or anything because I can take the cable and put it in the other speaker and it plays fine so it is not none of the eq. what would make a speaker just quit like that. all the joints look good and the jack looks ok. when I lay my hand on the cone I can feel some vibration in it but very little. |

Lyle, if this is in a cabinet with a jack plate, be sure that the wiring connections aren't touching intermittently. I would also examine the wiring from the jack plate to the speaker.....as well as the leads from the cone to the connection spring terminals.
If you have an ohm meter, you can check for continuity or shorting. If all these things check good, then I would remove the magnet from the speaker and look for a sticking coil. If it's an older speaker, it may have the foam plug that oftimes dislodges and melts in the gap.
It could be that the voice coil has just gone bad, but I'd check all the above first. |

If you are using a Peavey amp, put a jumper in the pre eq patch , in to out on the front. Pre out power amp in on the back. Could of lost connection. _________________ Bill |

If you are saying that you can connect directly to the speaker using a 1/4" plug from the output of a power amp, then it is not the speaker, it is either the amp or wire. |

I have 2 rack outfits and it does it with both with complete different cables all the way. I thought it might be the DPC 750 so I used another one and it did the same thing. I also have a Walker stereo steel amp head and the speaker does the same with it. I have put a new jack and a new cable to the speaker still does it. |

It sounds like the speaker's voice coil may have become intermittent, going open when it heats up. If the speaker can be swapped out and the problem goes away, get a replacement basket for it (a great thing about Black Widows) at about half the price or so of a whole speaker. Antique Electronics carries a number of BW baskets at good prices (get the exact model # off the label on the basket), or Bobbe Seymour could probably help you out as well. _________________ Visit my music page at http://facebook.com/drfried |

I just had the same thing happen. A peice of the old foam got stuck between the voice coil and the mag . It is sticky and got into the gap of the mag. I used some fingernail polish remover and cleaned up the inside and outside of the voice coil. I also cleaned the gap . Problem solved. |
