Paul..

Those Peavey Renowns -- both the earlier version as well as the Renown 400 were extremely versatile amps. I had an early '82 model with 2 12 inch scorpion speakers, but I do remember that a single 15 BW was an option. They have 2 distinct channels that were foot switchable, along with a 'saturation' control on the first channel -- gave it a bit of distortion for us 6 string players. They were rated at 160 watts and about the same size as the older session 400s. I have often kicked myself for selling the one I had. I've seen them on ebay and craigslist and have been tempted to get another one. I would recommend bringing an offboard reverb/delay pedal as I don't recall the reverb quality as being that great. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the performance. I recommend going to the Peavey website to download an owners manual to familiarize yourself with the controls/features.

good luck
Mike

They can be modified nicely to work on steel guitar. There are circuit elements that induce clipping for that "rock n roll" sound. If you are handy with a soldering iron you can disconnect these elements and the output transformer and get a cleaner sound. Have a professional look over a copy of the schematic to determine what can be safely removed to clean up the sound. I've done this mod for myself and was happy with the results.
