Had some fun doing a backyard jam last Saturday.
Ron Kanahele is on the steel guitar, and me on the 12 string guitar. Ron plays the classic "Moana Chimes", Feet Rogers style.

Here's another from the Sons Of Hawaii that we did.
I'm on the 12 string guitar and doing lead vocals.

ALOHA DERRICK,

Mahalo for your phone call, alerting me to your post. I always enjoy Ron's steel playing. Ron must be one of the few steel players who plays in the old Hawaiian style.

That was real nice Bud. Ron is the only one I've heard play that style except for Herbert Hanawhahine. His guitar sounded great.

Derick,
Mahalo for Moana Chimes by Ron. Heard him at the HSGA convention lastApril and it still gives me chicken skin. One question is he tuned to C6. Any more backyard jams please do not hesitate to post it.

Aloha Martin,

Ron learnt steel guitar from the great Benny Rogers who was Genoa Keawe's steel player, so he uses the same tuning as Benny, an E major.

Very Happy

Great stuff guys! I've always been a fan of the traditional old 6 string tunings...E Major, C#m, D9th and F#9. They were good enough for the likes of Dick McIntire, Sol Ho'opi'i, Andy Iona, et al, who never played 8 string steels, nevertheless managed to produce some remarkable music on standard 6. Smile

Aloha Martin,

Here's two more songs for you.
This is Ron Kanahele with medley of songs on the steel guitar.

Na Pua Lei Ka Ilima
Kolopa
Farewell, Malihini

This goes out to everyone in Kaua'i, a small place there called Koke'e.

Derrick says that..

Uncle Benny Rogers was Ron's primary teacher, but Feet Rogers also was his teacher. He can play the steel like Uncle Benny and Feet Rogers.
Ah yeah, that secret tuning E major.

I am glad to see Ron Kanahele emerging and being given some special recognition. Cool He is outstanding as a Hawaiian steel guitarist of the old school. He is not a Waikiki Hotel type musician, but he is the master of the Backyard Hawaiian genre and informal luau. Cool Cool

I believe that Ron is emerging more and more and will be recognized more and more for his talent. I also believe that he can generate some interest in the old style playing. Cool

Note: I am having a lot of trouble with Media Fire. There are a lot of popups and when you hit the MP3 it sends you to advertisement. What gives? Oh Well Oh Well

Aloha, Smile

Aloha Don,

On the left side of the screen, click on "CLICK HERE TO START DOWNLOAD".

A File Download window will appear and on the bottom you'll have 3 choices, OPEN, SAVE, and CANCEL.

Click on OPEN. The song will then be downloaded to your computers temporary folder and played back by your computer media player.

I'll have to ask Ron again when I see him. He had told me that he had only learned from Benny and that Feet was always just too busy away on the boat as a merchant marine or playing music with the Sons Of Hawaii.

Very Happy

Do that Derrick, and when you do he may add another surprise piece of information which I will let him tell you about.

Mahalo for the kokua above. It worked like a charm.

Don,

Talked with Ron this morning and he did have more interesting things to say. Since he is going to Winchester next year, I'll let Ron tell his story for those interested. Very Happy

Twayne,

Ron is using a Pre-War Rick. No amp, I had Ron connected to my L.A. Baggs Para Acoustic D.I. straight into a Yamaha 512SC P.A. Very Happy

Derrick,

Mahalo for the songs....specially "Kokee". I still can't get that Emaj. It works with the C6 but mising that "ROGERS" sound. Which I believe is only in their blood. Again mahalo

Hi Martin,

Although steels vary in tone even amongst the same models, it's helpful to use the same model steel and amp combo that Benny or Feet used if you want the Rogers tone. With a little experimenting of the settings, you should get a tone that's fairly close.
Benny used a double 6 Supro, Feet, a 6 string Rick Bakelite.

The Rogers use a lot of bells and chimes in their style of play, so practice up on this.

But the hardest thing to mimick, is the "FEEL" that the Rogers applied to their music. It's what separated them from other steel players.

Very Happy

Agreed Derrick, because it is the individual feel, and I guess no feels are the same.

However, Ron Kanahele has the Roger's "FEEL". IMHO.
