On another forum, someone posted this video of Red Rider's "Lunatic Fringe":

My first thought was, I don't think that's a pedal steel you hear on the recording. The overall tone and the attack of the notes sounds too sharp, it sounds more like slide on a Strat or similar 6-string guitar to me.

One guy on the other forum is telling me they used a lap steel on that song, and the Wikipedia page for the album "As far as Siam" claims the same thing:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/As_Far_as_Siam

But it also says "as seen in the video", which is laughable as the instrument in the video is clearly a pedal steel! Hence why I trust Wikipedia as far as I can throw the server it's run off of.

What do you guys think as far as the sound on the recording? Pedal steel, Lap steel, or regular 6-string guitar?

That looks like an early Fender 1000 without the roller bridge. That could very well be the instrument on the recording. That would be my vote.

It's Ken Greer on a pedal steel. Not only great lead, but cool power chords that the casual listener might think is 6-string.

There's photos of him in the Red Rider days. Maybe someone can see what the steels are.

I also remember some interview in the past where he talked about the Lunatic recording and his approach to the pedal steel; sorry I don't have a link right now.

Check out all he's recorded and produced. A talented musician.
