Hi -

I own a rather inexpensive Regal and would like to upgrade to something, uhm, nicer...

What price range starts making a difference?
I have to admit it's a bit of a vanity thing.

Suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks,
Uli

Well Uli, if what you have is an inexpensive stock Regal, a few more bucks will get you a Beard Gold Tone or Wechter-Scheerhorn that will sound noticeably better and keep you well under the $1K mark. The next step is a custom by someone like Gregg McKenna or Dick DeNeve, and several others that are in the $1-3K range. Above $3K gets you top of the line in terms of workmanship, sound, and custom appointments from the likes of Meredith, Beard, Clinesmith, Fishook and others.

Bottom line, get out to music stores, jams, festivals, etc and see and hear these things and decide for yourself what you want and in what price range. Also check out the discussion at Reso-Nation and ResoHangout.

Apologies to any luthiers that I have not mentioned. I have no interests in any of the enterprises above and for the record, I play a maple Clinesmith that I dearly love.

I agree with Dave. Here's some more builders: Rayco, Redline and Scheerhorn. The last one being very expensive, due to low shop output and high demand.

My favorite is the Clinesmith. Best looking and right up there in tone with Beard, Meredith and Scheerhorn, in my opinion. But everyone has there likes and dislikes.

PS. the "vanity thing" is what fuels about 90% of all of our G.A.S. : )
