Every time I go to STL my carryon gets checked by TSA because
of my steel bar and picks!
I carry all kinds of electronic equipment, chargers, etc that look far
more menacing than a plain steel bar but they red flag the bar all the time
and I have to explain it to them and believe me, they don't have a
clue!
I haven't run into one checker yet who knows what I'm talking about
"it's used to play a steel guitar" "What??" "How?" "Sir, please step
over here...."

I carried 30 to St. Louis on an airplane a few years ago - the only thing that saved me was a photo of me playing holding one.

The next question was 30? - I showed them the internet print out of the show and told them I sold them and that was the day I found out why you need to be at the airport 2 hours ahead of time.

I was the last one on the flight.

It is the round nose and they said it looked like a bullet - so I ask what caliber and I had 4 different diameters

So you were not the first

I flew home from St Louis several years ago with several sets of new strings, a tuner, and a new bar. I was held at security while they thoroughly searched my bag. I can see how all of those coiled wires, "some sort of weird electronic device", and the bar raised a few eyebrows going through the xray machine.

Hi, I guess that's a problem that's not going to go away, security being what it is......

Here is a song by fellow forumite Fred Kinbom about this very problem of security staff and steel guitar bars - I just got his new album, heard it on there, found it here on youTube too. Made me smile anyway!
