Saw Tommy Datamore

Post by Chip Gavlick »

Great show, I saw Tommy Datamore in San Antonio
at the Aztec Theater. Has anybody else seen the San Antonio Rose show? I told him I took a few lessons from Denny MAathis and he said he is one of the best players in Texas. Good to know.

Tommy is one of my favorite players. I'd just love to see him play sometime.

Yep, he can get it done!!!

I did a show back in the 80's in Manning SC and we were opening for Moe Bandy and Joe Stamply!

After we set up we went to catch a bite to eat and when we got back, Moe and Joe had arrived for a sound check!
Standing outside i heard some awesome steel playing going on and couldn't wait to go in and see who it was!
Tommy was waering it out but the funny thing was he was playing my Emmons!!
They stopped and he apoligized for picken on it but i told him it had never been played like that so its cool with me! My steel never liked me after that!
Super nice guy and i became close friends with the guitar player (J.T. Corenflos) which also is an awesome talent!
Tommy, thanks for the time we had together that night! :D

Tommy is one of my favorite players. If you want to hear some great steel listen to what he played on "Family Bible" on Johnny Bush's Kashmere Gardens Mud CD. Tommy's playing on this tune is simply inspirational.

All thoughs guys treated my band as though we were family!
Moe and Joe took us on the bus and we had a blast joking around!
Tommy even spent some time throwing a few licks my way! I have some pictures if i can find them!

Don't forget "The Return of Wayne Douglas," Doug Sahm's last recording. Tommy produced and played lots of killer, classic country steel all over that record.

I was remiss for not mentioning the fact that Tommy has one of the finest recording studios in the San Antonio area. Anyone looking to do a project should contact him....I think you'll find a website for Cherry Ridge [?]. Chime in Tommy and give us a great commercial. Seriously guys , the very best equipment in the world is virtually worthless without an ear [and the experience]like Tommy possesses.
