Has anyone ever thought about building a steel with a body made of a thick clear plastic like perspex so you can see everything working?
Just wondered if its ever been done?

It's a cool idea. There are acrylic guitars out there. Would that be strong enough? |

I think Jim Palenscar had it at one time, but MSA in the old days did build one out of plexiglass that you could see all the stuff through the body.
As I recall, it didn't sound all that good but it really looked cool!

| It would be strong enough, but would weigh at least 50 pounds before you put any metal on it. Plexiglass is really heavy. I remember the Ampeg/Armstrong acrylic guitars, and a Samick acrylic Strat style. Looks=WOW! Sound=so-so. Weight=Ouch!!! |

There's a multitude of mechanical sins under the hood on my steel, so I would prefer to keep the body opaque  |

My thought would be that it could be made but then someone would paint it or put wood grain contact paper on it  |

I seem to remember the guy from "LoneStar Steels" had a see through pedal steel at Dallas one year ... it just had an ali frame with the neck and fretboard on top and you could see the internal mechanisms because the guitar had no aprons or top deck, just the frame!
Looked very cool and I think the concept was to keep it very light as a sort of practice guitar to use on the tour bus etc .... ! Certainly looked different.
Perhaps someone might have a pic of it -- there's nothing on his current website.
