I should know this, but I don't. I want to amplify my tricone (a 2002 National Style 1-1/2 squareneck) for use with a large-ish band (sax, violin, accordion, steel, guitar, bass, drums). What are my options? I've tried just a microphone and it doesn't cut it; I need more volume than I can get with a mic alone.

Your suggestions are appreciated.

Hey Brad:

I'm in the same place with my national M-3. I'm going to go with the National Lace surface mount magnetic. have heard nothing but good things about it and it doesn't require any drilling.

My National Tri-cone has a factory installed Highlander pickup which is made especially for tri-cones. It works great. It sounds good and feedback is seldom a problem. http://elderly.com/new_instruments/items/IP-MAGX.htm

Here is the link to the Highlander site: http://highlanderpickups.com/catalog/magno.htm

I agree, the best sounding tricone amplification i've heard is the Highlander.

Does the Highlander have enough volume to be heard in a band with drums and a bunch of electric instruments?

I am well satisfied with the Highlander on my Republic tricone.

Yes,

I play PSG, lap steel, and National Tricone with the Highlander. I play them all at about the same volume with a band that includes drums, elec bass, and lead guitar. No problem keeping up.
