I have just bought this steel and am wondering if anyone can tell me anything about it. I will have it home the beginning of the week...Here are some pics. He says he thinks it is around a 1970 Marlen...I have never even sat behind one...The c6th neck currently does not have any of the rods hooked up...I will post some pics of the underside too. Any ideas on value? I want to make sure I come out ok...

I have one nearly identical to yours, which is probably late '60s or early '70s. Mechanically, it's absolutely the worst of the Marlens. Skinny crossrods that go into flimsy cheap plastic bushings that constantly work loose and fall out. Looks beautiful, nice tone, but the sloppy mechanics make it nearly impossible to keep in tune.
The mechanics can be improved with new, more robust parts, but it's a lot of work. |

The date might be written under the front neck. I have a T-10, similar to yours, from 10-25-68. |

It's easy to stop the cross-shafts from flexing, just screw a bracket to the body (along the centerline) to inhibit shaft flex.

I apologize. I'm sometimes "brutally honest". (At least, that's what wifey tells me.)
Jamie, everything's point of view. To some, that might be a great vintage "project guitar". And with enough time and work, it can certainly be made "acceptable". However, to anyone who is used to late-model guitars with precise mechanics and lots of versatility, it's a crude relic. The old Marlens, even though they're every bit as pretty as the old Sho~Buds, just don't sell nearly as well. I'd hate to see you invest a lot of time and money into the guitar, and then come up short if you sold it. But as long as you know what you're starting with and what to expect when you're done, all is well.
For folks like Rickey Davis, Paul Vendemmia, or myself (who could rebuild it for next to nothing), it could be a good deal. But for those who aren't skilled, and haven't the tools or the time, you could wind up investing as much money into this guitar as it's worth. On the plus side, it's in very nice shape, so you have only the mechanics to concern yourself with.
The difference between "a lotta work", and "a lotta fun" depends only on a person's attitude.
Have fun with it! |

I know what you mean Donny...I bought the guitar right so if I have to stick some in it I wont be out much. I am starting to enjoy finding the vintage guitars that look right and have the right tone...who knows it may be back on here for sale down the road! _________________ Michael Douchette's Franklin; Sho~Bud Fingertip D12; Sho Bud S10 6139 Serial #2911;1973 Fender Twin Reverb Silverface; Fender Cyber Twin; VZ Custom Telecaster; Epi Les Paul Custom Silverburst; Epi DOT; Copley Acoustic; Copley Acoustic Bass; Hammond E311 Organ; 1941 Chickering Baby Grand Piano, formerly owned by John Prine; 1921 Chickering Baby Grand 100th Anniv Quarter Grand |
