The first Marlen I saw and played belonged to a guy in Savage (Laurel area) Maryland in either 71 or 72 (too long ago to remember). Bob Cole from northern Michigan has a D-10 that he really likes.
I met Leonard once in early 72 when he brought over a ZB that he must have taken in on trade to Little Roy Wiggins music store in Nashville for Roy to sell. It was a mess and I had to get it "playable" before we could put it on the sales floor. |

I am due to be getting mine in about 2 weeks I will keep this in mind as I may need some parts, since I bought sight unseen about a month ago and have yet to see it. It looks like the s10 you posted but the area behind the fret board is black instead of white. Thanks for letting us all know. |

David, pass along to Lenny that we'd really like to see him join the forum. His Dad was one of the most
loved and respected members of our steel community.
There are lots of players that would like to have access to Marlen parts. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

My Marlen is virtually identical to Jaclyn's.
I'm putting mechanical improvements 'under the hood' to improve playability.
I have found that, merely by adding a centre brace to the cross shafts, the feel of the pedals is much more positive.
I have also moved all the springs (which hold the lowers in the centre position} to the keyhead end, and added some helper springs, attached at the same end.
I daren't show any photo's, as the aesthetic quality of my work leaves much to be desired, but suffice to say, she's playing like butter now |

Thanks for your posting about the marlen
subject ! and about the Zb custom steel
Theres just something That I love about
the old guitars they have that look and
feel about them that just pulls me in !
I have a early model Custom steel that
never had a name plate on it and no
numbers etc but it is a very Beautiful
pedal steel " Im having it overhauled
By Barney Miller in Covington GA. its
gona cost a pretty penny but it will be
a brand New Steel when it is finished !!
it will be in a class of it's own ".
no other like it " this steel favors
the Marlen steels a lot ! definately
will not take a back seat to any other !
Thanks David Dellinger

Dave, As a matter of fact I found mine on Craigslist in Charlotte. Gentleman said that he had actually recorded with it on a few albums. I believe he said on a Byrds/Birds? song/before my time. I believe he may have been a record producer. It is a was built in July of 1974. |
