I'm going to be working on a rack and barrel Sho-Bud soon. The pull rods seem to be aluminum. I never noticed this before on these, I guess I've never had all the rods out of one of these before. Are they normally aluminum? Is the temperature instability of aluminum part of the tuning problems these seem to have?
I was planning to put rods with nylon tuners on all pulls except the strings that need two pulls. Should I use stainless for all of them? Does the rod material make that big a difference in tuning stability? Should I use aluminum for all the rods to save on weight?
Should I stop worrying about such things and just practice more?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Why do you want to go to nylon tuners? |

Aluminum rods work well, Franklin and some other guitars use aluminum. However, I do prefer stainless rods because they are much harder to bend. More durable. |

Thanks for the info Bobbe.
James, It just seems like there is less chance for something to move accidentally with the nylon tuners. Am I wrong? It's not as if anything will be permanently altered, so no collectable originality will be lost. I just want the guitar to play and tune as good as it possibly can. I love the sound of this type of Sho-Bud, all the sounds except the clanks, of course. I hope to get rid of some of the lost motion and clanks and pops.
If I am making a mistake, let me know. I'm here to learn.
Thanks. |

Properly set up, you will not have the problems you are worried about. Nylon tuners are not made for that sort of undercarrage. There is a certain amount of slack that this system needs in order to function correctly. |
