Can a regular rivet gun be used to use rivets to attach draw tight lockable catches on pedal steel & guitar cases or will the gun pull the rivets through the wood? If not a regular rivet gun, is there a special tool that will do this? I'd prefer to use rivets rather than screws. Thanks, steve t

You might be safer to put a small fender type washer in the inside to give the secured backing for the rivet. That should hold till the cows come home.

Fender washers come in many sizes/thickness, go to an automotive paint/body supply store, they usually have a variety of sizes. Lowes, etc may have them. If all else fails, cut i/8" thick aluminum strips 1" X 1", and drill for the poprivet in the center. I think they make a backing plate for those type latches, which would be best.

l-0906 is the part # for the backing plate..$1.57 ea

Bob & Bill, Thank you for your help. I'll give it a try with the fender waswer. I did a search and found out it looks like this:
Here is an explanation:
for those who are ignorant like me: http://www.blurtit.com/q196034.html

I thought a special tool might be needed because on my cases there is no type of backing plates or washers on the inside of the cases. Again thanks. steve t

The "pop rivet" company makes a special washer for their rivets for such applications as you need,,I saw some at Home Depot,,,in 1/8" and 3/16" sizes

If you use a pop rivet you will have a protrusion on the inside of the case. If it's where it won't hurt anything you are OK.

I don't use pop rivets on catches. I either use "split rivets" or #6 oval head screws (depending of course on the material used for the case).

On Steel Guitar case handles, I use use regular machine screws with "T nuts" on the inside (inside of the lining material).

Blind mounting nuts are the best, they go up into the wood and can be made to fit flat on the inside, so nothing to mar the guitar, also you cannot pull them thru the wood, the most stronger way to go, drill a hole and press it in then put the screw in and cut it to size, it hides inside the nut.
