Franklin - price drop AGAIN

Post by Michael Douchette »

For sale... my faithful friend of 29 years.

I don't want to get into it, but sadly, I have to let my piece of country music history go. She probably should be in a museum, but economic times being what they are, that's not an option. She traveled the world with me with Tammy Wynette and George Jones and Dan Seals in the '80's, and has been on thousands of recording sessions. There are a lot of YouTube videos out there with me playing her. She's the third Franklin guitar Paul Sr. built, back in 1978. There was the prototype, then Paul Jr's first one, then this one. He serialized them as he sold them, so it is #11, officially. An SD-10, the pedal setup is Emmons, with LKL raising E's, LKR lowers them, RKL raises the F#'s to G#, and RKR lowers the 2nd and 9th strings. Still has the original hand wound Franklin pickup; not very many of those around. She has a Franklin volume pedal and the case Woody Woodell built, with what's left of the Tammy Wynette/George Jones stickers on it. Still plays like she's brand new; Paul knows how to build them. She also comes with a wealth of memories and stories; the memories I can't share with the new owner, but the stories of them I can.

She's not inexpensive; I'm asking $6,500. There's only one; I truly wish she could stay with me, but she needs someone else's loving touch now. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

For my friends and brothers that have expressed concern, there are no health issues.

For my "friends and brothers" that have expressed "hope"... NO, I am NOT quitting! So, no gig for you! :x

No, this is not easy; yes, it is necessary. I am in the process of answering the private notes.

Considering the rarity of a Franklin coming up for sale and the desireability this should not last long. If someone wants a Franklin they better jump on it quick.

Too bad that there is not a steel guitar hall of fame museum with a budget to buy and display these things. Micheal, I'm sorry that you are having to sell it. Maybe something will happen that allows you to keep it. Good luck to you either way.

Well, I had hoped to keep this within our forum family; guess that's not to be. Tuesday she's off to eBay.

I really want to keep this in our family here on the forum, if possible. I'd rather b0b got a donation out of this. In trying to do that, $6500 or best offer.

I've owned two very early Franklins (sold one to Lucky Oceans) and they are amazing instruments (as are the later ones). This is a completely hand built instrument (no computer machined parts here) and are pretty darned rare. I'd buy it if I didn't already have two :).

My wife (the E-babe) has not managed to list it there yet, so it's still only here. I'd rather b0b got something for this, instead of it going to a random individual out there somewhere...

These bad economic times are hitting many of us, that is certainly a great price for some lucky buyer. I'd sell the wife's furniture first.

Maybe I'll raffle it off... $10 for a chance... and NO, I would NOT enter my own raffle!

Y'know, Mikey, that might be a very creative idea. I've seen houses sold that way. For a $6,500 item, you'd need to line up 130 people willing to take the chance of getting your guitar for a mere $50 (or only 65 people willing to get it for $100). You would stop taking entries at 130 (or 65) and any person would have a 1 in 130 chance of winning your axe for just $50, or a 1 in 65 chance of winning it for only $100. A Franklin might be desirable enough that you could attract enough entrants.

Kinda unconventional but these are unconventional times...
