I would love to see baggage handlers throw a cased up PSG like that. They would have some very well deserved hernias _________________ Ellis Miller

Hey guys you are scaring me to death. I am traveling with my home made to England the end of August. I guess all I can do is hope for the best and pray that Kevin Hatton's case offers a great deal of protection. _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Bent, you can request that it gets put on the 'Fragile' Tray, They take it there by hand.
I will warn you though that i missed a flight in 'Chicago' to 'London' because the fragile stuff comes off last and by hand, so watch your layover time.
If you dont have more than an hour and a half , you will be pushing it.
I refused to leave my 'steel' so i had a 12 hour layover because i could not get to the terminal in time. It took 45 minutes for the guitar to come off of the fragile rack.
Travelling with a 'steel' really sucks, i'm sorry to say, and nobody has a clue what it is.
Do you have a direct flight from 'Canada??
I'm just giving you the 'Heads up' mate alright!
This has happened to me many times at either end.
Good luck Bent.
I always put the legs/pedal rod/rods,volume pedal etc, in my suitcase , so i can get it through the weight limit!
P;S I would highly recommend that you get some of those '
Fragile' stickers/tags, that can help SOMETIMES! _________________ A.K.A Chappy. |

Larry thanks for great advice.
I will fly direct from Toronto to Heathrow.
I was hoping to send it as a regular suitcase but you say that might be risky. Does sending as fragile mean an extra charge? I can always handle some waiting time since we arrive so early in England and the bus will leave in a couple of hours. I was thinking of wrapping the case in cardboard, leaving the carry handle exposed.
Yes, I was planning on carrying the pedal rack and rods in my suitcase. Still it's doubtful if I get thru the minimum weight but so be it.
I am confident though that Kevin makes a strong case. I am glad I decided on Kevin instead of trying to make the case myself. _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

There wasen't any 'extra charge' for me and depending on the service, some 'agents' even offer to put on the 'fragile' rack.
I would definatley not put it amoungst general baggage if you can help it,[ you may be ok ] i have seen my 'Sho-bud' thrown a few times, last time a knee lever was broke off due to thrust alone and i watched it from the cafe. The risk's are high bent!!
They don't always mean it, but the heavier something is, the more thrust they use and they don't let it land lightly on the rack, i suppose that works fine with clothes, but they don't use their heads and fiqure out, 'THIS AIN'T CLOTHES!
What they do bent, is they pick the stuff and lift it about 2 feet off the ground, and then they throw it onto the conveyer, this is where the Steel guitar hurts itself, like a 500 pound person falling over.
If you ask them politley if it could be put on 'fragile' they most likely will.
'Chicago O'hara' is one place where nobody give's a shit! Can't speak for 'Toronto'
The cardboard will help the case only!
I had a very polite lady carry my steel on, in 'Heathrow' and she offered! What a Sweetheart! _________________ A.K.A Chappy. |

All I can say is, ask Larry Sasser what happened to his Emmons, When he was flying to Dallas for a show.
That's all I am going to say. It'll make you think twice about putting steel on a airplane

Some of the airline stories are indeed, frighening, however..........
ask Bobbe Seymour about flying his g'tar around. Never any problems or damage. My experience was much the same as Bobbes'. |
