Topic: Who makes stand-up steels besides Melobar? |

| I've had a Melobar but I'd like to explore other possibilities. I'm thinking about modifying a standard guitar(like a Les Paul, an SG, a Tele, or a Strat) to be able to stand-up on stage but before I go through the trouble I'd like to know of anyone else offering something already or what others find to be the most comfortable alternatives. I've started compiling info about the Asher belly bar, the Redneck mod offered for Tele's and Strats and I'd appreciate any other info I could get. One of my big concerns is finding something that is comfortable to play. I've heard that the Peavey Power Slide is designed to make it easier to get access to the entire neck. That is a REAL need for me. Thanks for any feedback and info. Marty B. |

You mentioned Asher, so if your are interested in one of Bill's built-in-Southern Cal guitars, then apparently price is not an issue.
That being the case check out Jason Dumont's Lap King Bel Aire, with the support for standup playing that Jerry Douglas has been utilizing:

I'm using an Asher Electro Hawaiian Junior with an added strap button. I had to put the strap button a little in front of center or the guitar would just hang vertically. It still won't stay completely horizontal unless I cock it against one leg, so I lengthened my strap a little in order to play comfortably without bending my elbows out. I'm considering the Belly Bar, but now I've kind of got an act going with this thing.
