Very cool instrument, has an interesting tone with a little banjo sounding plink in the mix.

I got to play one of these for the EMP (Experience Music Project Seattle) music museum's guitar gallery collection of rare guitars. You can hear my sound sample if you visit the museum. Interesting artifact. Pretty weird sounding tho.

As you can see, it has a horn coming off the bridge that directs the sound. These were made for pre-electrical recording when everyone pointed into a horn that collected the sound to inscribe to disc.There were violins made with this construction too.

The one I played had a small horn coming back towards me as a sort of monitor, as well as the large horn. It had no resonance, having no real body chamber, just the megaphonic sound coming off the bridge to the dual horns. I enjoyed getting to play it but don't see any need to have one.

I own a Stroh violin and a 1 String (played cello style). The violin is very cool and gets a great sound. Tom Waits uses them on a few of his albums.

Is "Stroviols" the same??
