How many Pedal Steels do you own?

I currently have 4 pedal steels.

Sho-bud Pro III early to mid 70s - Traded A Bunch of Gear to get it
Sho-bud Super Pro...prob late 70s early 80s - Got from my Dads music Store
2006 SD Rains Spirit Model
2008 SD Rains 4/5

Last year I only had my Sho-buds. I had my Super Pro on the Road with me and every few days it seemed that some lever or pedal would shake loose or some other mechanical thing would act up. So I picked up a Rains from a forumite and then ordered another so I could have one on the road and one at home.

I was thinking about selling one of the Sho-buds, but then I pulled them all out of their cases and realized that I like all of these steels. I don't have much interest in picking up another steel, I was just wondering how many folks have bought steels, with the intention to sell an old one, but then wanted to keep them all.

I actually have to own two steels, because I sometimes do early and late shows on the same night in different venues. But I don't need three. :)

Don't tell my wife

I just started playing in April. I bought a Dekley S-10 because I wanted to give it a shot. We'll just say it took. In the last week bought a Derby D-10 and an MSA D-10 Classic. I wish there was a "Steel" shop near me but there isn't so the try before you buy isn't an option for me. I'm waiting for those two. So three for now but we'll see what happens when they all get here.

Joel, you bring up a good point about "try before you buy". In my neck of the woods, you have to "buy before you try", due to the scarcity of steel shops. I guess that's true for most players, really, unless you live within driving distance of Bobbe Seymour, Al Brisco, Jim Palenscar, Scotty, etc.

Mrs. Lee thinks that I've sneaked one or two in under the radar, but she's seen them all.
  1. Rickenbacker S-8, 6 pedals
  2. Fender 1000 D-8, 8 pedals
  3. Sierra Olympic S-12, 5+5
  4. Williams 400 D-12 crossover, 5+5
Soon to add a Desert Rose S-8, 5+5. She knows about that one, too.

I have 5 at the moment. Only 2 are playable and the others are apart . I leave one at church and one at home .I hope to have them all back together in the next few months. 3 MSA Classic's ( 1 D-12 that is playable ,1 SD-12 that is apart and 1 S - 10 that is almost back together . 1 Dekley SD-12 that is playable and a Thompson SD - 10 that I have finally got most of the stuff machined to go back together with it.
I also have most of the parts to build one of my own. I have the changer ,endplates , pedal bar , and all the curly maple lumber .

I only have one, now. I have never owned more than one steel at a time.

My first Pedal Steel, in 1969 was a Fender 2000.
My second was a 71 D-10 PP Emmons
My third and current is an 81 D-10 Franklin that I had built and was delivered in December 1981.
