I was playing some old 78 rpm Bell Records recorded in Hawaii around 1948 and I noticed on the label it said Jules Ah See- Steel Guitar and then Steppy deRego - Hawaiian guitar !!! I remember reading that the old native Hawaiians called the Slack key guitar a "Hawaiian " guitar !! I think most people think Hawaiian guitar = steel guitar but evidently the Hawaiians had a different meaning for their instruments !! Can any Native Hawaiians clarify this ??? Eddie "C"

Hi Eddie:.
When I first took lessons they called it "Hawaiian Steel Guitar". When it became so popular with Country and Western Swing type music, it seems the "Hawaiian" was dropped and was referred to only as "Steel Guitar". That's my take on it, could be wrong. |

Billy; You are absolutely correct, because; I agree with you 100%!!!!! ha~ha! In Mainland-Terms they are actually the same instrument, however; I'm sure Native Hawai'ians have their own cultural-beliefs! I like it when everyone is correct!

The "Hawaiian" guitar and the "Spanish" guitar.

The first Hawaiian guitars were just regular Spanish guitars with a high nut. Even when the Hawaiian guitar was first brought over to America and introduced into Country Music it was the acoustic version that was first used.
Maybe the distinction they're making is between the acoustic and solid electric instruments. |
