Here's a short audio clip of "Always", basic melody, one time through.

This is one of several tunes I'm now recording for a 25 song C6 Book tab/CD that I hope to have done in a few weeks. Notice that the Fender has only 6 strings on each neck! Makes it easier for working on 6-string arrangements. Winking

Nice stuff, Doug. I'll be looking forward to this tab/CD coming out. Darn, I was just in Northhampton last week, too.

Congrats on a great job on Always. In all my years, thats the first time I've heard that tune played on steel. Sweet sound. Lee

Thanks for the positive responses. I've always liked this song. It works well on C6 with a couple of bar slants.

Normally I have the guitar tuned to C6/A7 and E13. But... for now both necks are tuned to C6 (6 strings) because I'm recording 25 songs for a 6-string C6 lap steel book/CD. The two necks have a slightly different tone, very slight... and one or the other may be better suited for a particular song. It's crazy, I know... when the project is over I'll go back to 8-string C6/A7 and E13.

Aloha Doug,
Sounds very nice, and please keep everyone posted as to when the book will come available. Even though we (my wife and I) do predominantly Hawaiian material for the season, there are at least two months a year where we do a "regular" lounge gig on the ship. I'm always on the lookout for tunes I can play steel on. I have a few arrangements so far, and will of course throw in some Hawaiian material when suitable, but any new material to work on and perform is always welcome.
By the way, we'll be back from the ship in late August, and I'll be going to visit my old stomping grounds, UMass...any chance you have a regular gig I can come peep?

Thanks David, I'll post a notice here on the forum when the C6 material is ready. I'm an alumnus of UMass too! I don't have any steady gigs in the area now... as far as the end of August, I'll be playing at the Hardwick MA Fair August 21, 7 to 10, but I might be playing regular guitar or pedal steel on that gig, I'm not sure yet. I also teach four days a week at Downtown Sounds music store in Northampton.

Great playing Doug. I play the same tune a lot but I don't pick up as many strings as you do sometimes.

It is a very beautiful solo tune for the steel guitar.

Thanks Les and others, yes, it's a beautiful melody and nice chord changes. Written by Irving Berlin way back in 1925. I'm familiar with Patsy Cline's version, but I know it's been recorded by many others, including Sinatra and Billie Holiday. When I heard the melody and the chord changes I immediately thought "steel guitar instrumental"! Winking

Doug, I do a very old tune titled "The West, a Nest, and You, Dear" that always gets a nice round of applause whenever I do it on the steel. It's a bit slow so you have to be very careful that you don't drag the bar too much. Give it a try. It's also has a very beautiful melody for the steel as long as it's done right.

Whenever I play this tune, I use three strings only four times in the entire arrangement. Mostly two strings but it goes over very well.

Les, I did a search for that song and immediately found the sheet music on line, and played the chorus... it sounds good. A nice old time waltz.

A lot of public domain sheet music is posted on line. My favorite collection is at Indiana University ---> CLICK

There are hundreds of old songs available on line, sheet music free download, like the one below. This is why I encourage all steel guitarists to learn to read music. It will open up a whole new world.

Hi Doug,

Amazing coincidence. I just learned that tune on C6 a few days ago, and now you are playing it on my ex-blonde. That's her, right?

Nice job.

Best,

Bob

Hmmm, 4/4 time, I've never tried it as on old time waltz. As long as you and I consider the same beat as I do for an old time waltz. The version I play is a belly rubbing, slow waltz.

Hi Bob! Yes, I played the song on your old Stringmaster... the one I bought from you a couple of weeks ago. It’s got a real nice tone, strong pickups. I’m in love with the blonde already!

Bill Hatcher, thanks for your kind words. Much appreciated!

Les, I'm not sure I'm reading your post right, but a "waltz" is 3/4 time. A slow 4/4 song is not a waltz... but I'm sure you know that. Winking
"The West, and Nest and You" is in 3/4 time (a waltz), as shown below.
