Gord Cole at Back Beat was kind enough to send me a copy of this CD. I had noticed a steel guitarist on Net Radio playing a beautiful version of the old Johnnie Ray song; CRY. Turned out to be Burke Carroll who is the steel player on this CD. His work here on C6th is classic in the best tradition but he is distinctive in his playing by his exectuion and precision. Simply excellent steel guitar work !!

Song selection and arrangements are another outstanding quality on this CD. I mean, I have never heard a Western Swing arrangement of IS YOU IS OR IS YOU AIN'T MY BABY, the Louis Jordan hit from back a ways. If this isn't swing I don't know what IS !! The other songs are along this vein as well and titles tell the story: CRAZY RHYTHM; RAM-BUNK-SHUSH; SWEET TEMPTATION; SAN ANTONE ROSE with all the old Bob Wills step up modulations and some very nice vocal work on the Frankie Laine hit of: That Lucky Old Sun and a classic steel side bar on E9th by Burke.

Now not that I'm predjudiced or anything slanted like that but I think Burke's work make's this a CD well suited for anyone's collection. I'll wager even Herb would like thiS rendition of REMINGTON RIDE complete with a Chalker outro !! And his little side kick back on the vocal bridge of DEEP WATER is nothing but fantastic. Good music thoughout !!

I caught the Bebop Cowboys last night in Toronto, together with Bob Taillefer. Burke Carroll played great C6 and E9, and I agree that their debut CD is excellent. Some great twinning stuff between steel and guitar, too. What a fun band!

Hey Jim,
It was real nice seeing you again. Thanks for coming down to hear one of my favourite steel player who also happens to play with one of my favourite band.

I agree Paul, the CD is excellent. The Bebop Cowboys play at the Cadillac Lounge on Queen Street West in Toronto every Wednesday night. Regards Bob

Bob: If that's the band for the middle of the week, I'm wondering WHO do they have on the weekends ??
