Howdy,
I'm back in New England after some nine years in California. I used to love going to Sandy's Country Hollow in Dracut, MA but I've heard that they're now closed. I'm currently based in Nashua, NH and would like to know where I can see some live Country music (and live steel) in the area. Thanks a lot everyone.

Thanks for the reply. I've never been to a steel jambory so I'd definitely to check one out this July. Same holds true with a steel show so September's event looks good to me.

Ian.
Try Doug Beaumier. He plays in the New England area, and is an excellent picker. Doug and I worked together for 6 years back in the 80's. doug@valinet.com
He works in Mass. a lot. Leigh |

There is a fair number of country dance places up your way. Check out The White Buffalo in Methune NH and a place called Billy's just north of Boston. Doug knows that circuit as well as anybody.

Sammy :Steel Show July 28th? Don't you think thats a little to close to the "Big Mass bash"? One thing that hurts most functions is to put them too close to each other then the people and players get turned off or can't make both...Bill Hankey always schedules his shows as does Frankie Caruso eo as to not interfere with others shows and conviennce of the pickers.

Hi Joe Casey I don't think the July Steel Show in Vermont will interfer with Bill Hankey as he usually has his Mass Bash in October and Frankie Carusso has his in November if I'm not mistaken.I'll have to E-mail them to find out when they were planning theirs. No one that I know in the area has one in May thru August in the North east.I'm just trying to push the Steel Guitar. If it is interfering I won't do Vermont anymore.I thought I was doing something good but I guess I'm not.Sorry Guys

Thanks Leigh and Bob,
The gigs are few and far between these days, and that's fine with me My 48 guitar students each week keep me busy enough! I play about 3 or 4 times a month in "far western" Massachusetts and Connecticut... mostly with 2 bands. One is "top 40 country" and the other one is "old-style" country. We have an interesting gig next Thursday... a party for the Governor of Connecticut. We did it last January and the best part was the free food!

Sammy you are doing a great job for the Steel Guitar my only thoughts were that The Mass bash as far as I know is going to be around the same date this year as it was last year.July. It was nice meeting you at last years event. I have hopes to come up again and last word I got from Smiley (before his injury)was that he planned on attending too.I hope you continue the great job you did in R.I.in Vermont...

Hi Joe I want to thank you for your kind words and I will still be running the R.I. Steel Guitar Show as I'm going to remain President as they all want me too.I did E-Mail Bill Hankey and he said to go on with my plans as he is having differculty trying to get something together and may not have a Bash this year. I don't know if people know it or not but Bill pays a lot out of pocket to have this great time for them and they should give him all the support they can. What kind of accident did Smiley have?I guess I have been lucky with the R.I. Show as I never had to take money out of my pocket to run all 5 of my Steel Shows. We have money to run next Sept. 22nd show and to buy a recorder so we can record all our shows and our Quarterly meetings. We even have a Quarterly news Letter so everyone knows where the guys are playing and about diffrent players licks.

Ian, my band plays at the Plough and Stars in Cambridge MA about once a month. (and other nightclubs around) You can hear live steel, but I ain't makin' promises about my proficiency. You can always check our schedule: http://hometown.aol.com/stumbleweeds
Come on down, we're always happy to see new people.
Also watch for a western swing band called the Spurs, they play the nightclubs in Boston and have a great steel player.[This message was edited by Chris DeBarge on 30 January 2002 at 02:46 PM.] |

Sammy you are right about Bill going out of pocket for the Bashes. He has done that for as long as the bashes have existed. He mostly has paid for the backup band and a few featured guest along the way.Last years raffle of a guitar donated by a local music shop I hope helped him somewhat. This man deserves some kind of a honor for his great efforts throughout the years.

Ian, the closest country club to you that I know of would be Cellie's in Lynn, Mass. The D'Eon twins play there every Friday, & provide a good mix of Country, from Sixties to current. Donnie D'Eon, every local steeler's friend & mentor, used to play for Jeannie Shepard & is one of the tastiest players around these parts.
Cellie's also has a Country open-mike night Sundays, with Jimmy Allen's band - but no steel. |

Hey Guys.
Any of you ever play the Blue Star Bar in Saugus Mass. ??
In the early '70s I played there every now-and-again with a no-name road band that worked the eastern Canada / New England states. I watched from the stage one night as a guy got thrown through the front window (from the inside) of the place. He surely lost the fight. Earlier that night two women got into a brawl and knocked the door half off the womens restroom, which was conveniently located directly across the dancefloor from the stage !!
In general, the audience entertained the band whenever we played there. We played alot of fast songs whenevr the broken glass started flying... it was a riot.

Tiny,
I believe that the Blue Star is now gone, changed to something else. |

I played at the Blue Star a couple of times back in the 80's.... what a "joint". John Penny used to play there and I think he did a lot of the booking too. I'm about 100 miles from Boston, so the Blue Star was not really in my "loop". I think forum member Sandy Martin used to play there a lot.
Tiny it's nice to see you on the Forum. I met you back around... 1989? at a little place called the Village Inn in Verbank NY. I was playing steel and guitar with Donny Sawyer, and you got up and sang a couple of songs with us that night... and I backed you up on steel! You had recently gotten off the road and you had some great stories. It was a fun night and I'll never forget it.. Thanks

Yeah Doug I remember that. It was fun singing with such a great player backing me up. It was fun.
I don't think the Village Inn is doing any music these days. That is somewhat out of my area as my wife and I are trying to buy a business up near the Adirondacks so I'm playing alot up that way.
The Blue Star was surely a "joint." I think you are right about John Penny doing alot of booking in there.
I figured a few of you would have had the same fun playing in there that I did. |
