the jbl speakers are often subject of last discussions. so, i jump in here with my question, too in a new topic:
read much about the jbl k-130 to be a perfect speaker for tube amps. so, of course i needed one, too for my 135watt vibrosonic and got me two...! (one for spare)
as brad posted in a past topic it's rated with 125watts. so i can feel save with this speaker in my amp not cooking it?!
(for sure i won't abuse it with boomy bass or brutal distortion orgies)
conclusion: is it a good speaker for this amp??
regards
guido
by the way; the amp was originally equipped with an ev speaker, sounds very punchy and a bit "hard" - so i hope to got a big improvement now!? _________________ Sho~Bud Pro II, Sho~Bud LDG, Fender '79 Vibrosonic 1x15 JBL, Fender '72 Bandmaster Reverb + Custom 2x12 Vintage Alnico Cab, Fender 75 1x15", Randall Steel Man 500, Peavey Session 500, Goodrich L120, Sho~Bud Pedal

I have two 200 watt Randal SGA500's and both have JBL E130's in them, which are essentially the same as the K130 with a ceramic magnet I can run that amp wide open all night long with no problems, your K130 will do just fine in that 135 watt Fender amp and the increased clarity and efficiency of the JBL speaker will probably mean you can run the amp a bit cooler as well.
Remember that most of the time we are only using a wee fraction of the available power, when we open up the volume pedal with a PSG it is generally to increase the sustain of a dying note rather than trying to punching out killer volume from it at the top.
The issue is heat, as the current increases the voice coil heats up and in severe cases will warp and get caught as it passes through in the gap, first arching then burning then breaking the windings or tearing apart. If you are playing with a lot of distortion that will increase voice coil heat at lower wattages due to the sudden spikes in current through the coil. If you are using a clean tone you should have no problem at all.

Guido,
I bought a new Brown tolex Vibrosonic back in '62 while stationed at Spangdahlem, Germany. It came with a JBL-D130 speaker. That was the best sounding amp I ever owned and I regret selling it. If you don't crank lots of distortion or crank up the bass, You can use a JBL speaker without blowing it up. Understand that if you play a lot of loud bass notes the JBL will not hold up. I suggest you play your amp on stage at a reasonable sound level and mic it through the PA for added volume. I also have used the E-120 speaker which sounds just a good as the D-120. Any recone of a D-120/130 will have the "E" recone kits installed as JBL hasn't make the "D" series for many years. This is the info I got from a JBL authorized service center in Ne Jersey.

larry, keep in mind that the '62 vibrosonic is a totally different amp than a '79 vibrosonic!
mine has 135watts and i think that will blow a d-120 / d-130 within minutes!
and i still wonder, if the k-130 (rated with 125watt) will handle it reliable.

Hi Guido,
I have a 1975 or so 100w Vibrosonic with the original D130F, original cone.
Played it live, played it loud for about 14 years, no problems. If you use common sense with volume peaks, harsh distortion and low notes on the C6 , the K130 will be fine.
BTW , I`m currently punishing a K110 in a 200 w Evans RE200 and a K120 with a 150 w power amp using a U12 steel and various lap steels with distortion (Zendrive). So far no problems

he, he... right, sir! my second one is there, just waiting to be reconed.
maybe i'll get me another cab, throw it in and put it under the amp! must be a wall of sound then...
but, who will carry that rocks then??
i'd better shut the doors and practice the winter time... _________________ Sho~Bud Pro II, Sho~Bud LDG, Fender '79 Vibrosonic 1x15 JBL, Fender '72 Bandmaster Reverb + Custom 2x12 Vintage Alnico Cab, Fender 75 1x15", Randall Steel Man 500, Peavey Session 500, Goodrich L120, Sho~Bud Pedal

Mine carry much easier, now that they are 3 pieces. Food for thought. |
