I'm livid. I'm gonna go back to a restore point and screw vist SP2. Who needs this S#&(?

Early adapters beware! It's a good idea to wait a week or two before upgrading to a new Windows service pack. This lets other people find the big flaws and lets Microsoft release new patches for their service packs or patches, so that their patches don't break your previously installed patches. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I haven't even seen a download link for SP2, how did you get it? Last I saw it wasn't "officially" released yet to the general public.
Updates can "break" some items but usually reinstalling the device or program will fix it or the device manufacturer or software vendor has to issue a patch for their product to make it compatible (and usually the vendors know this way ahead of time but drag their feet in putting out the needed update and as Wiz noted - wait a while before installing this type of update and usually the vendors will have the needed updates available). |

Bob, I found it on a link in another forum. But it's still not setup for a Microsoft "update".
I'll try it in my system that has the same sound card as Chip's and see how it works. |

Fellas,
I'm on Windows Auto Update. I get notices all the time that 'updates are available'.
It was simple as that. I clicked on the update icon and 1 update was available - Vista SP2. The download range was like 345 -370MBs.
I was hesitant about downloading it, as I remember "SP" issues in the past, especially with XP.
But then I thought, well, you really should keep "vista" up to date - because, well, it's VISTA.
The restore came out fine and things are back to normal.
I'm definitely heeding the advice on this one, and will wait for a while.
Surprisingly, the Auto Update, as I sit here, has not reared up yet. _________________ Chip

Chip, I did the update and my SB Audgy SE and all sound functions work OK. But, I don't have all the extra sound items installed that you do and probably one of those is causing your problems.
I saw four posts on the Dell users forum this morning and all reported successful SP2 upgrades. |

Thanks Jack, I've been away from the Forum for a while and just now picked up on your reply.
What I meant was that the only way I could hear anything after the SP2 install was through Audigy.
Like Goldwave, Nero, Winamp, Cubase - non of those produced audio. Only if I ran something through Audigy.
I don't have time now to check out your 'uncompatible' list, but I will definitely get to it.
Maybe I'll give SP2 another shot. Thanks again, Jack. _________________ Chip

I just read the Microsoft bulletin about some of the programs that will lose some or all functionality after you upgrade to Vista SP2 and it includes some programs commonly used by SGF members. Some or all previously released versions of the following applications are among those affected:
Avira AntiVir
Lenovo System Update
Spyware Doctor
Spy Sweeper
Trend Micro Internet Security
Other programs may also lose functionality and the best thing you can do when this happens is to go to the website that distributes that program and search for an updated version that is fully compatible with Vista SP2. Some manufacturers may not be aware that their programs are broken by this service pack, so please take the time to report your findings to them. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Chip, everything you listed except Cubase (I'm not using Cubase) work OK on my system with SP2. |

Thanks Jack and Wiz,
I've been looking at your programs and links about compatability.
Should I try SP2 again?
Wiz, I signed up for Trend Micro, and have the paid version 17.1.1250.
It's pretty much all I use for 'security', now.
but...TM takes "forever" to load when I first boot-up.
Is this just the way it is, or do I need to upgrade? Figured, because I bought into the program, that they would alert me as to any upgrades, but haven't seen any? I think I timed TM's 'loading' once, and it was almost 1.5 minutes. In the PC world, that's a long time, isn't it?
At this point, I really don't know what to do about SP2. Is it really critical to get it installed?

Chip;
Trend Micro Internet Security is updated automatically and that includes the program version itself. When those updates occur the application's icon will disappear for a half minute or so, then reappear as the updated version. Other updates may occur after you restart your PC.
What isn't updated automatically are major versions, like 2008 to 2009. Those must be purchased and downloaded and installed, followed by a reboot. The reasons include the sheer number of files in use that must be replaced, or deleted.
Before you try to install SP2 again seek any available updates to your hardware devices and security applications. Also, run an Acronis image backup of the working PC, as it was before the attempt.
You may have to reinstall some programs after the upgrade to Vista SP2. A service pack upgrade is no small feat. Lots of system files are changed and Registry entries altered. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Thank you, again, Dr. Wizardo -
But, is it imperative to make the Vista SP2 move?
Where does one start to look at all one's hardware and security programs? This is agonizing. No matter how many you grab on your first trip around, you are still bound to forget one or two, right?
I'm pretty confident, though, in my ability to put Humpty-Dumpty back together again, if need be.
When I do go for SP2, should I disable Trend-Micro? I didn't disable it on my first SP2 dwnl/instl. And what about Secunia PSI? Disable, or no? _________________ Chip

Chip asked about disabling his security before upgrading to Vista SP2. That is a valid question and is actually recommended by Microsoft for some upgrades.
Disabling is not the same as uninstalling a program. It simply stops the service that monitors files as they are accessed and changed by the upgrade. In this case, altho nobody else here has reported any problems after installing SP2, it can't hurt to try disabling Trend Micro Internet Security (TMIS) before upgrading. But, I would recommend turning the Windows Firewall back ON, as soon as you turn TMIS off. This will protect the PC from hostile incoming TCP traffic in the interim.
After the upgrade has rebooted the PC try to reactive TMIS. If there are any failures to initialize any of its services you should download it again and reinstall it. If you still have your original TMIS setup file saved, run it. If this fails to start all parts of TMIS you should visit trendmicro.com and use the Live Chat window to request assistance. Have your registration code handy (you did save that email didn't you?).
Any service pack upgrade may break programs and services that worked perfectly beforehand. Try reinstalling the application first, then try obtaining the latest version from the program's owner. They often release updated versions after the fact. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I went ahead late last night and installed SP2 again.
This time, on Wiz's advice, I disabled Trend-Micro, re-enabled Windows Firewall, and tried to disable Secunia, but couldn't find where to do it, so it kept running in the background.
The install went much faster this time around, but the sound didn't work again, as before.
So I went into Control Panel\Sounds, and easy enough, there was the culprit. My default setting had been changed to like some USB speaker setting. I simply re-set the speakers' default.
This is probably what happened the first time around, but CMSS Player 5 did work. I didn't check it first this time, so I'm not quite sure. I just went straight to SOUNDS and found the problem right away.
SP2 does appear to make things move quicker. Maybe it's a placebo effect, too. _________________ Chip

Chip, good to hear it's working OK. I haven't seen any problem posts on the Dell users forum about SP2 problems, which surprises me. There was one post that a user was leery of installing it because of SigmaTel sound problems with SP1, but he decided to do it and SP2 installed without any problems.
Actually, from what I can recall this has been the most "painless" service pack from Microsoft. |

Chip;
Thank you for keeping us updated on your progress and success upgrading to Vista SP2. Your struggles are appreciated by all of us and we can learn from them. Sometimes little things get changed that can easily be changed back, if one digs deep enuf.

Thanks Jack and Wiz...
...for your vote of confidence. I certainly want to contribute as much as I can to the Forum. All the great advice that has come my way, if I can offer any help (being a PC rookie at best) than I feel I've, at least "paid my way", and hopefully have helped out other Forumites.
My MO now (before I even attempt to do anything) is to pay very close attention to every move I make. Write it all down - step by step.
Then if something does go haywire, I've got a complete record of all my moves. I never did this in the past; it's real important. Now, it's much easier to zoom in on possible trouble areas. Saves a ton of time. Sure took awhile for this obvious concept to sink in.
Thanks again, Professors _________________ Chip
