I noticed that most folks here are using some form of computer recording.
Maybe someone might be able to make a suggestion that might help me, though.
When trying to record direct from my Fender Hot Rod Deville to my Fostex MR8, I get nothing. Not a bad signal, but none.
I'm coming out of the Preamp Out to the 1/4" unbalanced input.
Since I'm not getting anything, I guessed that I'm just making some basic mistake, like not having something turned on.
Anybody have any ideas?

I don't have your Fostex recorder, but have read some of the manual.
You haven't said too much detail, so a few questions:
Is your cable good?
Have you succesfully plugged the preamp out into anything else and had it work?
Are you plugging into Input 1 ? (which you are supposed to with a mono signal)
Have you set the input switch on the side of the recorder to Mic/line?
Have you adjusted the trim pot?

I tried another one and it did the same thing.

No. That seems like it's the next thing that I should try.

Yes to all of those.
The next step that I should try, I guess, will be to try plugging fro the preamp of the amp to something that I can hear.
Thanks, Jon, fo helping me think through this.
It's really frustrating when stuff doesn't work as you expect it to.

You are using a standard guitar cable (Tip/Sleeve) to go from the preamp out to the recorder in?
If you are using a guitar cable, try going in direct from a guitar, switching the recorder input switch to Guitar. That way you can at least check if the cable is good.
The preamp out is before the Reverb and Presence controls. There will be no reverb on the preamp out signal. |
