I just watched redheaded hottie Jenny Lewis romp through a spirited ditty called "See Fernando" (from her album "Acid Tongue") on the Craig Ferguson show.

Her band consisted of bass, drums, acoustic guitar and lap steel, though a look at their website indicates a band of multi-instrumentalists. The lap steel guy (or was it a girl with a fake handlebar mustache!) played with a flat pick and a large bullet bar using a ton of reverb and delay. I think it may have been E tuning. There were many extreme glisses up and down the neck, plus thrashed out power chords and rhythmic riffs.
Not "by the book" at all, but I couldn't help liking what I heard and saw.
For better or for worse, it was LAP STEEL on TV!

I really dug it! The lap steel was the ONLY lead instrument. Very cool.

Yes it is.
If you check out some of their other tracks, you find that not too many of the others use steel.

Good stuff though, they're a talented band - and Jenny has a great voice.
Easy on the ears and easy on the eyes.

I'm glad they picked that tune for the Ferguson show.

Thanks Rick - that was a really fun clip! Great energy and loved the fake moustaches.

I might be a beginner now, but someday I'm gonna steel the show.

"Farmer" Dave Scher appears to be playing a Fender Deluxe 6 (with the trapezoid pickup). If I had to guess, I'd say he's using open E. We discussed Jenny Lewis' appearance on the Elvis Costello-hosted show Spectacle (Sundance Channel) a while back.

Thanks for sharing, Rick! I don't normally stay up that late. Smile

Here's a video of another performance of the same song:
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=51282422
There's a good shot of the lap steel around 1:53
The more I check out their videos and tunes, the more I realize how exceptional they are.
Very theatrical, something not too many bands are these days.
They're doing really well, with a major label contract (WB) and they're booked up solid, mostly in theaters.

I liked the performance. The acoustic guitar reminded me of early Everly Brothers, and the whole thing had a rockabilly feel to it. For once, though, I thought the steel was too loud.
