Hi,
I'm in the studio with a group of curious musicians. We are trying to find out this steel guitarists name. Does anyone know?
He sure is playing great.

I'm Not 100% sure but I've seen footage of other shows in those years and I have seen the Name Jack Evins on the Steel. I also have seen that name on a box set of Ray Price. Hope this helps.

I don't think that's a Fender, in fact it looks just like Len Ryder's triple neck Sho-Bud pedal steel on the "Sho-Bud Unofficial Website".

Hi Paul: In 58 I went to a package show in Souix City Iowa, featuring Earnest Tubb & Ray Price, Buddy Emmons was with ET & to my surprise, Jack Evins was with Price, Jack was filling in for Jimmy Day, I wound up backstage as a guest of Jack's, In addition to being a great guy. He told me that he had recently cut "Invitation to the blues" for Price. He was playing a no endplate Sho-Bud similar to mine that he must have got shortly after I got #3 in late 57, Also, a very fond memory, is when you came to the Carlton Theatre here in Mn. with Tillis, & You & Terry Bethel came to my house to jam! Take Care! & say hi to your Mom & Dad! Al Udeen

Below is another link to a Ray Price video which has Jack "Curly" Evins on steel. It appears in this video that he is playing a modified (pedals added) Fender Stringmaster quad. He did play steel on Ray's "Invitation to the Blues". In a conversation with Buddy Emmons in StL several years ago, he told me that Jack gave up playing steel professionally to go into law enforcement work. I know that Bobbe Seymour knows him and would have information concerning him.

On Ben's link to Ray Price's Crazy Arms, it looks like a young Buddy Emmons with his Bigsby in the back, against the set. He's to the right of and behind Ray. See if you think I'm right, or wrong.

Keep on pickin'!

It is indeed Buddy Emmons behind the Bigsby who was part of the Jimmy Dickens band at the time. Jimmy and Ray were both on the same show that this video is taken from. Of course, Ray's harmony singer is Van Howard (who sang harmony on the record), (who after a banking career, is back singing and has a CD on the market with Pete Wade and Buddy Emmons backing him up. I have it and recommend it)...the fiddlers in the video are Dale Potter and Tommy Jackson, and the girl sitting in front of Buddy in the purple dress is singer June Webb. That exhausts what I know.....or at least think that I know!

It's funny that Van Howard is playing guitar in F, and Ray Price is playing in E. Were these shows lip-synced?

Ray has a capo on the first fret, so they are both playing in F.

Thanks! Jack's playing is a new discovery for me. His emotion and confidence shines through with everything he played.

And no, the Gannaway shows were not lip synched, they were all live. On some clips though, the sound and picture are not in perfect synch and sometimes wrong solo inserts were used.

The 2 links below are Ray Price videos that feature Jack Evins on steel. The video of the middle break of the first apprears to have been tampered with but towards its end it is back in sync.

The second link features Jack playing a "C6" break and the video does match the audio just slightly offset in time.

In searching around for Ray Price/Jack Evins videos, I ran into a video where Ray appeared on Ranch Party in LA in the 50's. Marian Hall does the steel work and I just had to include it.

From what Ive been told, Jack is still around Nashville, having retired from the road pretty early on to pursue a career in local law enforcment.
I think he may have bought a new Emmons LeGrande from SGN some years ago so he must still be into steel guitar.
I feel sure that one of his peers from the day would have his phone# or email address should you want to contact him. I know that he and Big E are friends as it was Buddy who told me about Jack trying out the Emmons LG @ SGN. Ive always enjoyed Jack's steel guitar playing and I wish I knew more about him and his history, etc. Like Jay MacDonald, he's never recieved enough credit, in my book anyway.
Al, I remember that jam...Terry, Paul, Ben Brogdon(?), Brian Sterling and maybe Bobby Whitton, cant remember the drummers name, Rob Hajacos and Hoot too maybe? Quite a show for so early in the afternoon. Nice free bar too, thank you. Them boys made it out to "The Loft" as well after their gig. Terry and Paul watching me all night... lots of Crown consumed for nerves on my part that evening. I miss The Loft for a number of reasons :)
Paul, please let us know if you get in touch with Jack, thanks.
