Hello,
I want to replace the single-coils in my 2002 Williams, and was thinking I'd like to go with 710s, but heard from a reliable source that the "new" 710s that are available really aren't the same pickups quality and/or soundwise. I have a pair of Bob Hoffnar's Tonealligners in my push-pull and like those a lot, I'd just like to try something else in this Williams.
If anybody has a pair of "real" Bill Lawrence 710s for sale, let me know.
Thanks for reading my post.

I love single coils... but I was playing too many gigs where they were humming so badly that the tuner would only see the 60hz.... so I had to go the humbucker route.
I had a real 705 in my Williams which was great! It only took 2 years to find one..... I took it out because I wanted it in my main gig Sho~Bud. Now there is a BL XR-16 in the Williams, which is also good.... slightly different amp settings than the 705, but easy to dial in. I have not tried the "new" 705, but it doesn't seem to be the same pickup as the old one.
I don't know about your Williams, but mine is on the Emmons end of the spectrum tone wise... so the Tonealigners would probably be cool. |

Gerald, I suspect you may be thinking of what you've heard about the "new" 705s. I haven't heard anything about there being "new" 710s. The thing with the "new" 705s, of course, is that they are being made by someone other than Bill Lawrence--Bill no longer makes 705s--so it's not a question of Bill's quality varying. As far as I know, the only 710s around are Bill's own units, which he is currently still making. I have one in my Williams SD-10 and I think it sounds great--very single coil-like, but humbucking. |

I have 710s on my Williams D10, and liked them so much I had Jerry Wallace wind 710s for my new Weenick guitar and it sounds just right, Jerry has wound pups for all the guitars I have owned.

One of the advantages of modular pickup systems like Sierra and MSA is that it's easy to try out a variety of different pickups, which is exactly what I did with my Millennium.
After trying out several different ones, I settled on a Tone Aligner. I think it's the best of all that I tried.
To be fair, I did not try out any Bill Lawrence pickups. The others I tried were the stock pickup, (I think it's a George L) a True Tone and an EMG active pickup. They all sounded good, but the tone aligner's ability to adjust the volume of each string won me over. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

I don't intend any challenge, just curious--Why have Jerry "wind 710s" when 710s are available from Lawrence, and you "liked them so much"? I well understand your loyalty to Jerry, but after all, Bill's trying to make a living, too. |

I thought Jerry only did single coils. _________________ Olli Haavisto

I have to say, I am more confused by what's what with these pickups than I was before I started this thread.
What are the pickups in Paul Franklin's steel in his video? I thought those were 710s, or are those 705s? They look very plain, just black bobbins with plain pole pieces. If those aren't available anymore, I would love a recommendation on what you guys like for humbuckers. As I said, I have a pair of Tonealligners in my Emmons, would like a different sound for the Williams.
Scotty's recommended trying some George Ls, for what that's worth.
Thanks very much.

The pups on Paul`s guitar are 710s. They are available and made by Lawrence. A recent re-issue of the blade type 705 is made by someone else.
The 710s sound great in a Williams, I`ve had them in three Willys. Wood neck and aluminum neck. Currently in a wood neck model. Recommended. _________________ Olli Haavisto

I have 710's on my Williams and they do a great job.
I have also used XR-16's and feel they are extremely close to the 710's so I would recommend either for the Williams.
I would not recommend E-66's or 10-1's as I feel they have a brittle somewhat harsh tone quality. |

I have a D10 Williams 400 and 600. True tones in the 600 and George L 10-1's in the 400. Both sound great to my ear and find the 10-1's a little more on the mellow side.
