This is a little piece/arpeggio study in the key of E that I wrote a few days ago for C6/A7. It is on a very standard chord progression and my aim was to write something in what I would call 5th position, that is, 5 frets above the standard open position.
Audio is attached. There are some technical difficulties in the piece that show up my deficiencies but it takes more than a couple of years to get a Doug Beaumier sound!

Nice job, Guy-- very catchy & tuneful, and well played. No difficulties that I could tell.
I liked the piano accompaniment. I've almost never heard an actual backup piano part used for non-pedal steel on this forum, which seems strange...

Thank you for your encouragement. Doug, I found that tune in Db that you posted months back to be both inspirational and instructional.
Thank you for your comment, Stephan, but as far as deficiencies go, there is nothing like the cold hard ear of the microphone to allow some honest self appraisal. The very first phrase throws up a problem of intonation from trying to play a legato phrase across the first three notes with two fret changes in the middle. The rhythm is the third phrase in bar 11 is dodgy. I dropped that phrase in a number of times and it is still not right. The piano is good but the BIAB drummer sounds like he is unloading a box of metal ashtrays.
It sounds OK but overall the sound is mostly weaker than I am aiming for. Better equipment might help but I am pretty sure that the sound and touch come with time. I remember hearing Larry Carlton playing acoustic guitar and being amazed at his phrasing and sustain, stuff that I had assumed was part of the 335 and the Howard Dumble amp. I toned down my equipment lust about then. |

What a nice little study! When I get the chance, I'm gonna tackle it myself. I especially like that you've included standard notation along with tab notation AND the chords! In my opinion, that's the only way to do it. _________________ Primitive Utility Steel |
