With the economy being the way it is,a new guitar is not in the budget any time in the near future. What are the basic grips and techniques for getting the faux 6th on the E9 side of the neck ?

Using the 9th string instead of the 8th is the equivalent of pedal 6 on the C6th.

Using the 9th string where you would normally use pedal 6 (aka the b7 of the chord), as b0b said, sounds huge, and if you add the A pedal with string 5 up top, it gives nice tension.

For a big Maj7 chord, use string 9 as the root with the A and B pedals down.

If you lower your 9th string, you get the same notes at the AB pedals position that you do two frets back lowering your E's.

Also, if the band is playing a G chord, for example, hit your A pedal at the 3rd fret and that E minor chord substitutes as a partial G6 chord. My favorite voicing here is strings 8,6,5.

I love playing that style on E9. Have fun!

Dustin,

I've got a bunch of C6th sounds on E9th on my tab pages. Some are basic and some are somewhat advanced. They cover lowering the E's To Eb, lowering the 9th string a half tone, lowering the 10th string a full tone, using the 3rd pedal to get a C6th style maj7th and using a half A pedal.

Either play with your E's lowered (making it B6 tuning) or play with pedals A and B down (the old A6 tuning) are two good places to start.

Doug Jernigan's " Swingin' E9th " course is just what you need Dustin
pedals A&B (strings 4567) give you the high 6th voicing
& E to Eb lever the low 6th voicing

As Pedal 6 has been mentioned here is how to get pedals 7 and 5.

http://users.interlinks.net/rebel/steel/allmyexs.html

Pedal 4 can be somewhat achieved, single string wise with the A pedal and a 5&6 sound if I recall what they sound like correctly can be achieved with the A&B&E pedals together.

Oh why oh why does C6th not pay (excluding TX).
