Chuck continues to mine the 1960's for great steel tunes!

I've always loved A Whiter Shade of Pale, and the organ theme just played itself, prompting me to work up this arrangement. A tip of the hat to Jim Cohen and Barry Sless. I'm using my old MSA pedal steel and BIAB.

Very nice version of that great song .
Its 75 years since the PPL( Public performance licensing authority ) was established and over here in the UK Whiter shade of pale by "procol harum" has just been announced as britains most broadcast track in that 75years by that establishment.
Bohemian rhapsody by "Queen" was second.
I suppose they just count up the copyright licence money it has raked in over the years.

Glad you're enjoying the arrangement. I remember being surprised when I found out that the Procol Harem was from Britain and not somewhere in southern USA.

Wow, great version of AWSOP, Chuck!

I've been a Procol Harum fan since that song was first released back in the 60's. I belong to a PH mailing list and I posted a link to your site for the other members to enjoy. The admins also run http://procolharum.com/ with the endorsement of Gary Brooker, PH's vocalist and piano player who still performs with/leads the band (he’s the only remaining original member).

It's really too bad that the beautiful organ melody which you interpreted so beautifully on steel was the cause of 2 lawsuits and a lost friendship. Long story short, after more than 30 years of seeing the organ part he created on record transcribed and accredited to Brooker/Reid, organist Matthew Fisher successfully sued for a writing credit on AWSOP. While he won the bitterly contested case, he was awarded no back royalties and is currently appealing that part of the decision. It’s sad because as recent as 2003, original PH members Brooker and Fisher had reunited and were performing with PH together again (see the PH Live at Union Chapel DVD).

Hi Gary,
I'm glad that you are enjoying the music. That's an interesting story about Procol Harum. It reminds me of Santo and Johnny, two Italian brothers from Brooklyn who had a falling out over the success of Sleepwalk.

That's astounding.

A Whiter Shade Of Pale has always been one of my all time favorite songs.

Abba's "Dancing Queen" is a great vehicle for a pedal steel guitar instrumental. Some songs sound great on the steel but are awkward and hard to play on the instrument. Some are easy to play but don't sound all that great. Dancing Queen not only sounds great as an instrumental, but lays out so well it's almost as if the writers were PSG players who wrote it as a steel instrumental and added the words as a afterthought.

One would think that there would be enough money for Booker and Fisher to share.

When will people ever learn that the more money you have, the less important it becomes, and personal relationships are far more important than numbers in a bank account?

Mike, it is astounding and what is even more so is that the most broadcast Beatles song must be by far their weakest...".Hello, goodbye" just goes nowhere lyrically or melodically compared to some of their other great songs.
