Hi Basil,

There is a run-down of the variations of this model on the Notecannons site:

www.notecannons.com (Click on "Aluminium lap steel" under "Electrics" in the left hand menu).

I remember reading somewhere that Mario (?) Maccaferri brought back National 7-strings for Gino Bordin and one other French player from NAMM in the USA in 1934 or 1935. Gino Bordin called it his "guitarre magique". This was the first National electric lap steel, and it was out of production by the time the New Yorker was introduced, which was in 1936 (or maybe earlier - the New Yorker is in the 1936 catalog and the aluminium lap steel isn't). The one in the picture you posted looks like the third model on the Notecannons site. Whether there was 7-string variations of the earlier versions, I don't know. But I think 1934-35 is a good guess. Mark Makin will know for sure.

I would love to try one of these old steels one day!

Fred
