Who have you been listening to while driving this week? For me, so far, it's been Julian Tharpe, Big E, Mike Johnson and Mike Sweeney. I might put Jernigan and Seymour in the CD tonight, we'll see!

I listen to all of the BIG names on steel but the bands I'm don't play too many instrumentals so I have begun listening to vocals with a lot of steel.
I really like the music that has been coming out of Texas. Bobby Flores, Jake Hooker, Mike Siler, Curtis Potter, Darrell McCall and Johnny Bush. I like Amber Digby and Miss Leslie too. I play in a couple different groups as my schedule allows. One is the Twitty Fever Band out of eastern Pa. You know thats a treat with all that John Hughey steel.

Since someone mentioned them on this forum a while ago, I've been loading up on Calexico albums. So glad a band named after my home town doesn't suck. Very border town influenced. Tuson, AZ is close enough.

Not enough steel, but the trumpets make up for it.

To balance things out, Ray Price and Miles Davis.

Mike Johnson-Dierks Bentley's "Feel That Fire" Louvin Brothers Tribute, and Joey and Rory's "Life of a Song"
"Cowboy" Eddie Long-"That Lonesome Song" Jamey Johnson
Gary Morse-Dierks Bentley's "Feel That Fire" and many other cds.

Mainly, Pete Finney and Al Perkins on Patty Loveless' latest CD "Sleepless Nights" and Ralph Mooney on that great Waylon live double CD, both of which I highly recommend.

But in addition, myself, since one of the bands I play with periodically, Chicken Tractor Deluxe, just released a CD where I'm playing steel on about half the tunes. I'm painfully dissecting what I'm happy with and what I'm not.

The guitar player in me is listening to some cool live board tapes of Michael Bloomfield from 1969-71. Cool stuff.

The vocal artists deserve much credit, but I lean toward the CD's where Paul Franklin is on the studio sessions, which is vast in itself.

At the TSGA I bought Buck Reid's CD and its been playing constanly since Dallas in my Suburban.

I fly regularly. My iPOD has a mix of steel, western swing, new and old country, ~pre-1970 jazz and a couple of old time string bands! The steel music I have been listening to is Maurice, Jernigan, Loessberg, and Tommy Dodd. I just converted Bobby Black's SGRC album and "Lloyd Green and His Steel Guitar" from vinyl. Ain't technology marvelous!

Currently, the only one I'm listening to in the car is Doug And Bucky, Doug Jernigan and Bucky Pizzarelli.

I'm all over the map regarding my traveling music. Along with the aforementioned CD, my car player is loaded with Charles Wuorinen's Archaeopteryx, Karlheinz Stockhausen's Stimmung, Bernard Krause's Citadels Of Mystery, JazzTimes Superband with Bob Berg, Randy Brecker, Joey DeFrancesco, and Dennis Chambers, Sangoma, by Miriam Makeba, and last but not least, Jimmy Bruno's Maplewood Avenue.

OOOPS! Almost forgot. The player also has Complete Recorded Works of Roosevelt Sykes In Chronological Order (1951-1957) ... gotta have a little piano music, too!

Beats the heck outta' the radio in Austin, Texas.

I'm with Georgia Bill. Buck Reid totally knocked me out and I bought his CD and it's established semi-permanent residence in the GMC Envoy. Great musician, and a down-to-earth nice guy to boot. What's not to like? Just this: I can't play like he does, and that's very bothersome.

He has a beautiful rendition of "Cry." Only one that rivals it is Sam Cooke's version, and he had the benefit of lyrics.

This week, it's been Johan Jansen's "Head Back in the Clouds". Several other fine steelers on this album too.

Herb, you do a pretty descent job playing on JB's "Lost Highway Saloon". I mean you ain't no slouch by no means.

Even though I'm a steel player, I rarely or never listen to steel instrumentals, or even songs with steel in them, when driving.

I prefer listening to classical music and Trad Jazz

I've been listening to SteelRadio.Com in the car on my iPhone thru the stereo. Its many of the above, only on shuffle. Its the Jack FM ® for steel guitar.

As Dave Mudgett had posted, I'm also listening to my bands new CD. Its a great place to test out mixes. The flat eq is a constant for me there. Everything gets "squashed down" on the radio, but its easy to compare CD's equally there.

Depending on the car stereo, there's the: "If it sounds good out of a cardboard box, it'll sound good on anything!" lowest denominator kind of principle. Though, some car stereos are now almost as good as some home theater sound systems mine is more of the former variety because...besides, isn't the car is the perfect place to really crank it up when stepping on the gas on the highway when the coast is clear? huh?


Since the timer has buzzed, and all the pencils (more like crayons here) are down, the pressing of our first CD is complete, I might as well get used too what our songs sound like now.
