For the past few days I’ve been listening to a CD called “Steel Reflections” by Swedish steel guitarist Jan Jonsson. The music is best described as R&B and jazz influenced jump blues, and as far as I can tell it’s all done on the C6 neck.
I get a lot of CDs from other steel guitarists. Occasionally I get one that’s to put it tactfully, less than wonderful, but most are quite good. Often they are excellent. But hearing all these fine recordings all the time leaves me somewhat jaded. All too often I hear something and think “yeah, this guy is really good,” but the recording doesn’t blow me away, simply because I’ve heard so many good ones.
It takes a lot to really impress me.
This CD by Jan Jonsson really impresses me. Once you hear him you'll understand why.
Jan has a MySpace page where you can hear some of his stuff. I urge everybody to go there and listen to him. Here's the URL.

Mike you beat me to this!
I've been meaning to try to crysalize my scatterbrain thoughts enough to give Jan the review that I feel his great CD deserves. This CD is great! What Jan is doing is really something special IMHO. The production and playing are top notch, but it's the content that really is unusual. Way to go Jan! All of my thumbs way up! |

Thank you so much, guys!!
I am so blessed to get this kind of enthusiastic comments from two of the great players whose music and theoretical skills inspired me to make this record.
Mike: Your Firebird Suite CD never ceases to amaze me; new intricate stuff in your arrangements continue to reveal themselves. I'm really looking forward to start digesting your other CDs.
Rick: Thanks for introducing the McCoy pedal to me. It sure was an eye-opener for me in my study of the steel guitar jazz idiom.
Best regards,

Hej Ulric,
Thanks for the support! Too bad I cannot be at the Stockholm steel meeting in May to meet you and the other Swedish Steel devotees. Have fun and make your C6 neck stand out among all those E9:ers.
