My old PC with Outlook is running XP Pro, whereas the new system with Windows Mail is Vista. I'd like to move my email over to the new PC.

Thanks!

Yes, assuming you saved them to a USB drive or DVD or something like that.

If your mail, bookmarks, cookies, etc exist only on the hard drive of the other machine, you could temporarily install that drive in your new machine.

If your old drive is an IDE drive, the new machine may have only SATA ports. In that case, I would back up the stuff from the old machine to a USB drive and then plug the USB drive into the new machine and import the files.

I think there are programs that can transfer between two machines over a cable also, but that could be a hassle.

Open Windows Mail and go to file/import/messages and choose Outlook.

Be prepared to not enjoy Windows Mail.

Try using the Vista Files Transfer Wizard to export your files and settings, which include email. Or just export the email to a file, save it to a disk and plug it into the new computer, then import it into your email client on the Vista computer.

Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail both import exported messages from Outlook Express, which are .dbx files. Not necessarily doable with MS Outlook files, which are saved as .pst files.

Hi Mitch and Wiz -

From 0utlook (on my old PC), I exported the emails to a .pst file. I then transferred it to my external harddrive, and then on to my new PC.

When I go into Windows Mail and choose to import from Outlook, I get a pop-up stating:

"Messages cannot be imported from the MAPI client. MAPI is not installed on this computer or an error occured while trying to initialize it."

I wonder if Outlook Express will accept .PST files? I could download OE to import the files, then I could export the files as .eml to Windows Mail.

I decided to use Windows Mail just because it was on there. I only do basic emails functions anway, so thought it would do the trick. Hopefully it has lots of storage capacity. But, if it's better to stick with Outlook, I could load my Outlook from Office Pro 2003 (XP PRO) on there when I load Excel and Word.

Thanks again for all your help. I'm sure I'll have many more questions until I get everything set up, and I really appreciate your patience!

Smile

I'm afraid that you are not going to be able to import .pst files into either Outlook Express or Windows Mail.
Quote:
Outlook Express stores your messages in a folder that contains several different .dbx files. These files (folders.dbx, inbox.dbx, outbox.dbx) contain all your messages. Windows Mail cannot import any of these files individually; you must import the entire Outlook Express folder.

I read the following on a support forum:
Quote:
You can install Outlook onto the Vista computer, copy the .pst to the Vista computer, open the .pst with Outlook, then you can import into Windows Mail.

Microsoft has information about managing .pst files here.
